Iconic Villain Peter Stormare Spotted in Beverly Hills Ahead of Fargo Anniversary

Swedish-born actor Peter Stormare, renowned for his chilling portrayals in classic films like Fargo and The Big Lebowski, looked almost unrecognizable during a rare public appearance in Beverly Hills this week. The 72-year-old star, whose career spans decades and includes collaborations with Hollywood heavyweights, was seen on Tuesday picking up lunch at the upscale Bristol Farms market.

A Low-Key Outing with a Notable Leg Brace

Stormare sported a casual ensemble of a black short-sleeved shirt, black Adidas track pants, and a white cap during the lowkey excursion. Observers noted a brace on his left leg as he navigated a crowded parking lot. This rare sighting comes as the actor prepares for a significant cinematic milestone.

He is currently gearing up to host a special 30th-anniversary screening of the iconic film Fargo on April 14 at the historic Fargo Theatre. The 1996 black comedy crime film, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, earned critical acclaim and seven Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Actress (Frances McDormand) and Best Original Screenplay.

From Swedish Debut to Coen Brothers Fame

Stormare made his professional acting debut in the late 1970s in the Swedish crime film The Score. His breakthrough came in the 1990s when he took on the role of the taciturn criminal Gaear Grimsrud in Fargo, starring alongside Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi, and William H. Macy. He followed this with the villainous role of Uli Kunkel, leader of German nihilists, in The Big Lebowski.

The actor has previously revealed intriguing details about his Fargo character. "My character was built on two guys from their younger days," Stormare shared, explaining the Coen brothers combined one man's first name with another's surname. "I was told that the character always smoked—didn't say much at all, could even fall asleep with a cig in his mouth." He admitted the role was physically demanding, recalling, "I did throw up a few times—especially in that famous bar-scene in the beginning. Geez—I was soooo sick!"

A Versatile Career Across Film, TV, and Voice Acting

Beyond his Coen brothers collaborations, Stormare's filmography is remarkably diverse:

  • Major blockbusters like The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Armageddon (1998), and Bad Boys II (2003).
  • A memorable turn as Lucifer in the 2005 supernatural film Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz.
  • Recent appearances in 22 Jump Street (2014), John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), and the upcoming Until Dawn (2025).

His voice acting credits include popular video games such as the Call of Duty franchise, Destiny, and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. On television, he is widely recognized for playing John Abruzzi in the Fox series Prison Break from 2005 to 2007, with guest roles in NCIS: Los Angeles, Graceland, 1923, Tracker, and General Hospital.

Constantine Sequel Developments and Creative Concerns

A sequel to Constantine is currently in development, with Stormare expected to reprise his role as Lucifer. However, the actor revealed last year that Keanu Reeves has expressed dissatisfaction with the scripts. "I think Keanu, which I know pretty good, is not so happy with the scripts and usually what comes out of the studios," Stormare said.

He elaborated that Reeves "wants to do a sequel that is very close to the first one" and emphasized the original's spiritual themes about demons and regular people. Stormare cautioned against over-commercialization, stating, "Don't turn it into big Marvel... [Don't turn it] into us flying around in harnesses all the time and shooting each other up. Don't bring in the big guns. Let it be." The 2005 film became a cult classic, grossing approximately $230 million worldwide on a budget of $70–100 million.
