Security Expert Warns West Faces 'Most Potent and Enduring Danger' from Russia

As Western security infrastructure confronts a potentially existential threat from within, a leading expert has outlined the most "potent and enduring danger" to its fundamental makeup. The United Kingdom and the broader Western alliance are grappling with one of their greatest tests, according to analysis from Professor Anthony Glees, a renowned security and European affairs specialist at the University of Buckingham.

Trump's NATO Stance and the Growing Threat Perception

Former US President Donald Trump recently declared that America's role in NATO is "beyond reconsideration", while criticising the alliance as a "paper tiger" for not aligning with his and Israel's controversial policies towards Iran. This drumbeat of potential withdrawal, central to Trump's "America First" agenda, has been intensifying since before his initial term. However, Professor Glees argues that this stance dangerously overlooks the "enduring and most potent" threat residing right under the West's nose.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Professor Glees emphasised that NATO members must urgently reassess "who threatens our national security". He stated, "We understand that a defensive alliance needs to have a crystal clear view of who threatens our national security here in Europe. We need to forget our 'big Daddy' top-down concept of defence and realise our focus has to be on a bottom-up appraisal of the great danger facing us right now and then plan accordingly."

Russia Identified as the Primary Adversary

Professor Glees unequivocally identified the primary threat, stating, "The enduring and most potent danger to our security in the UK and in Europe is Putin's Russia. He is an aggressive and violent peril who must be countered." He warned that relying solely on the United States for defence is tantamount to surrender, adding, "To argue we can only do this with the USA is tantamount to saying to Putin we will surrender if you attack us because we cannot rely on the USA any longer."

Russian state media has capitalised on the internal NATO discord, with presenter Olga Skabeyeva remarking on Thursday that "no one" believes the United States would assist fellow pact nations if they were endangered. She asserted, "Who believes now that the United States will come to the assistance of Nato countries? No one." Russian President Vladimir Putin appears emboldened by these developments, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk describing the coalescing world events as resembling Putin's "dream plan".

European Leaders Express Grave Concerns

Prime Minister Tusk highlighted the critical timing of these threats, noting that Europe faces significant internal obstacles. He elaborated, "The threat of Nato’s break-up, easing sanctions on Russia, a massive energy crisis in Europe, halting aid for Ukraine and blocking the [EU] loan for Kyiv by [Hungarian prime minister Viktor] Orban — it all looks like Putin’s dream plan."

Echoing these concerns, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described Trump's threats as "very harsh words" and pointed out the beneficiaries of such discord. She stated, "Precisely because who benefits from such statements or from disagreements among allies? Vladimir Putin and similar figures." This consensus among European leaders underscores the urgent need for a unified and resolute response to the Russian threat, independent of American support.

The expert analysis and political commentary collectively paint a stark picture: the West must confront the reality that its most significant security challenge emanates from an external, aggressive Russia, even as internal alliances face unprecedented strain. The call for a bottom-up reassessment of defence priorities resonates as a crucial step towards safeguarding national and continental security in an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape.
