Zelenskyy Offers Drone Defence Expertise to Saudi Arabia Amid Escalating Conflict
Zelenskyy Offers Drone Defence Help to Saudi Arabia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated Kyiv's offer to assist Saudi Arabia in combating Iranian-designed unmanned aerial vehicles, leveraging Ukraine's extensive battlefield experience. In a Telegram post on Saturday, Zelenskyy detailed his conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, focusing on regional security dynamics and Iran's role.

Ukraine's Unmatched Expertise with Shahed Drones

"Ukraine has been fighting against 'Shaheds' for years, and everyone acknowledges that no other country in the world has such experience," Zelenskyy stated. He emphasised Ukraine's readiness to provide support and expressed hope for reciprocal assistance. This dialogue occurs as Ukrainian manufacturers of cost-effective interceptor drones report significant export potential, with inquiries emerging from the United States and Middle Eastern nations due to escalating tensions involving Iran.

Intensified Russian Assaults on Civilian Targets

Meanwhile, Russian aggression has escalated, with a missile strike on a residential building in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, resulting in at least ten fatalities, including two children, and sixteen injuries. Zelenskyy condemned the attack, urging an international response. Overnight, Russia launched twenty-nine missiles and four hundred and eighty drones, primarily targeting energy facilities in Kyiv and central regions, causing damage in at least seven locations.

Ukrainian mobile air defence units, such as those conducting night patrols in the Chernihiv region earlier this year, play a critical role in monitoring skies and intercepting Shahed-type drones during air raids. These teams utilise a combination of Western missile systems, fighter jets, truck-mounted guns, and interceptor drones to counter the frequent assaults involving hundreds of Russian-made drones based on Iranian models.

International Sanctions and Shadow Fleet Seizure

In related developments, Swedish authorities seized a false-flagged cargo ship, the ninety-six-metre Caffa, off the southern coast, suspected of belonging to Russia's shadow fleet and transporting stolen Ukrainian grain. The vessel, which departed Casablanca, Morocco, on February 24th en route to St Petersburg, was boarded by armed police near Trelleborg. Coast guard officials confirmed it is on the Ukraine sanctions list and allegedly used for illicit grain shipments.

Strain on Global Defence Stockpiles

Questions regarding America's weapons reserves have intensified as the U.S. campaign against Iran progresses, with many Democratic lawmakers criticising it as a "war of choice." Experts highlight missile defence systems, particularly Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors, are under significant strain due to high demand in Ukraine and Israel, respectively.

Ryan Brobst, a scholar at the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, noted, "I'm not particularly worried about us actually running out during this conflict. It's about deterring China and Russia the day after this conflict is over." This underscores broader strategic concerns about maintaining global security post-conflict.
