Federal authorities have arrested 18 individuals on charges related to the distribution of illicit drugs, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, in the vicinity of MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. The arrests were announced on Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney's Office, which also confirmed the seizure of 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of fentanyl from a single residence.
Operation Details
The operation involved more than 200 personnel from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), according to Anthony Chrysanthis, the special agent in charge of the DEA in Los Angeles. The arrests followed the execution of three warrants at residences in Southern California and six warrants at businesses in MacArthur Park that were allegedly selling narcotics.
Key Suspects
Authorities believe that a couple from South Los Angeles served as the primary suppliers of the drugs sold in the park. These individuals allegedly stashed the drugs in storefronts and distributed them to street-level dealers.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, an appointee of President Donald Trump, stated during a news conference at the park that the arrests were a response to failed California policies. He criticized programs that distribute clean needles and Narcan, a life-saving medication for fentanyl overdoses, as well as what he described as lax consequences for drug users.
“MacArthur Park should be for families and residents of Los Angeles, not for drug dealers and gangsters,” Essayli said.
Investigation and Cartel Links
Investigators have identified the Sinaloa Cartel as the supplier of fentanyl and methamphetamine in the area, Chrysanthis confirmed. The defendants are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, while seven additional suspects remain at large, according to Essayli's office.
MacArthur Park, located in a densely populated immigrant neighborhood west of downtown Los Angeles, has been the site of numerous homeless encampments and open-air drug use in recent years. The area also saw a significant show of force by federal immigration authorities and the National Guard last summer.
Raids and Evidence
Aerial television news footage showed agents gathered outside a row of businesses across from the park, with one agent using a chainsaw to cut through a wall. Essayli posted video on social media showing LAPD officers assisting in the effort and a raid on a residential home.
The operation, which began on Tuesday night, underscores ongoing federal efforts to combat drug trafficking in urban areas. The DEA and local authorities continue to investigate the supply chain and distribution networks linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.
