Bahamas Boat Disappearance: Arrested Husband in 'Extremely Fragile State', Lawyer Says

Brian Hooker, the Michigan man arrested in the Bahamas following the disappearance of his wife during a boating trip, is now in an extremely fragile state, according to his attorney. The 59-year-old has been detained by authorities but has not been formally charged in connection with the incident.

Traumatic Events and Physical Injury

Hooker's lawyer, Terrel Butler, stated that his client is completely heartbroken and deeply distressed by the situation. His primary concern remains the ongoing search for his wife of 25 years, Lynette Hooker, who vanished while the couple was traveling from Hope Town to Elbow Cay on April 4.

Adding to his distress, Hooker sustained a knee injury during his arrest. According to Butler, Hooker fell overboard while handcuffed during a police search of his boat in challenging weather conditions. He was submerged in cold water and ingested seawater before being rescued by officers. Hooker is expected to receive medical treatment at Rand Memorial Hospital.

Conflicting Accounts and Family Concerns

The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that Hooker initially told investigators his wife fell overboard with the boat keys, causing the engine to shut off. He claimed strong currents carried her away before he paddled the vessel to shore.

However, Lynette Hooker's daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has expressed skepticism about this account. In media interviews, she suggested:

  • Her mother was unlikely to simply fall from the boat
  • The couple had a history of conflict, particularly when drinking
  • There were past incidents of choking threats and threats to throw her overboard

Aylesworth told Fox News she believes there's more to the story than what has been publicly disclosed.

Ongoing Investigation and Search Efforts

The Royal Bahamas Police Force arrested Hooker on Wednesday evening as a suspect in the disappearance. Assistant Commissioner Advardo Dames confirmed the detention, while Royal Bahamas Defense Force commander Origin Deleveaux indicated search crews continue looking for Lynette Hooker as of Friday.

Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard has opened a criminal investigation into the incident. Hooker's attorney maintains his client unequivocally denies any wrongdoing and has been cooperating with authorities throughout the investigation.

Butler specifically addressed the allegations made by Aylesworth, stating that Hooker categorically and unequivocally denies her claims about past incidents. The legal representative emphasized his client's distress over being unable to participate in the search for his missing wife while detained.
