Former Ohio State Football Star Faces Decades in Prison After Bank Robbery Guilty Plea
Marcus Williamson, a former defensive back for the Ohio State Buckeyes, could be incarcerated for up to forty years following his guilty plea to multiple bank robbery charges. The 27-year-old athlete, who played for the university from 2017 to 2021, admitted to stealing approximately $22,000 from various banks during a spree in March and April 2024.
Details of the Bank Robbery Crimes
According to reports from the Columbus Dispatch, Williamson executed the robberies by handing notes to bank tellers, demanding money in specific denominations of $20, $50, and $100 bills. He wore latex gloves during the incidents, and prosecutors stated that in five of the 2024 robberies, he either claimed or implied he was armed with a gun, heightening the severity of the offenses.
His criminal activities came to an end on April 24, 2024, when he was arrested after leaving the First Merchants Bank in Columbus, Ohio. Police officers, who had already been investigating Williamson, discovered him in possession of money stolen from the bank, leading to his immediate apprehension.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Sentencing
This week, Williamson entered a guilty plea to nine counts of robbery, comprising five second-degree felonies and four third-degree felonies. Initially, he faced a more extensive indictment with seventeen robbery counts, six felony theft charges, and one misdemeanor theft count, but the plea agreement reduced the charges.
Currently held at the Franklin County Jail in Columbus, Williamson awaits his sentencing scheduled for June 25. The potential penalties range from probation to over forty years in prison, depending on the judge's discretion based on the circumstances of the crimes and his prior record.
Background and College Football Career
During his tenure with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Williamson participated in 46 games and contributed to the team's success by winning four Big Ten titles. His athletic achievements stand in stark contrast to his recent criminal actions, highlighting a dramatic fall from grace for the former college football star.
Related Case Involving Another Former Ohio State Athlete
In a separate but related development, another former Ohio State football player, Kirk Barton, was sentenced this week to a prison term of five to seven and a half years. Barton, a 41-year-old offensive lineman who played from 2003 to 2007, pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated vehicular homicide for a car crash in June 2025 that resulted in the death of 24-year-old Ethan Perry in Dublin, Ohio.
Initially facing two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and two counts of Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI), Barton saw the other charges dropped as part of his plea deal. The judge also imposed a permanent suspension of his driver's license, underscoring the serious consequences of the incident.
These cases involving former Ohio State athletes have drawn significant public attention, raising questions about the challenges faced by some players after their college sports careers end. The legal outcomes for both Williamson and Barton serve as cautionary tales about the severe repercussions of criminal behavior, regardless of past achievements on the football field.
