Fatal Shooting Near Sawgrass Delays Opening of Gates at Players Championship

Police have apprehended a suspect following a deadly incident that occurred close to the TPC Sawgrass golf course, resulting in significant operational delays for the prestigious Players Championship event. The gates at Sawgrass did not open until 9am on Saturday, with hospitality areas further postponed until 11am, due to what officials described as "operational considerations" stemming from the nearby violence.

Police Capture Suspect After Incident Near Course

According to St Johns County sheriff Rob Hardwick, the suspect, identified as Christian Barrios, shot two individuals multiple times around 10:30pm on Friday in the parking lot of a Walgreens store, situated approximately one mile from the golf course. Hardwick stated that this was a domestic violence situation, and both victims were transported to a hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries.

Canine units pursued Barrios onto the TPC Sawgrass property during the manhunt. Hardwick detailed that Barrios, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Saturday, at one point picked up a PGA Tour radio before discarding it. He then allegedly stole a black BMW, leading to a high-speed chase by Nassau County authorities in northeastern Florida, which culminated in a forced crash into wooded terrain. The suspect fled on foot but was subsequently located and taken into custody without further incident.

Third Round Began on Time Despite Delays

Despite the gate delays, the third round of the Players Championship commenced as scheduled at 8:15am, with no postponements to the tournament itself. However, the PGA Tour's decision to delay public access until 9am and hospitality areas until 11am was implemented to ensure safety and manage logistical challenges arising from the police activity in the vicinity.

Sheriff Hardwick emphasized that Barrios has a lengthy criminal history and was acquainted with the victims. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with updates expected as more information becomes available. This incident has cast a shadow over the golfing event, highlighting broader concerns about public safety in the area.
