A convicted rapist who was on the run for five days after escaping from immigration detention while awaiting deportation has been captured by authorities in a dramatic police operation. Michael Angok, aged 30, managed to flee custody on Wednesday while being transported from the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre to a hospital in western Sydney for medical treatment.
Escape and Initial Search Efforts
An initial search conducted by New South Wales Police quickly located some of Angok's personal items discarded on the road just a few hundred metres away from the scene of his escape. Despite this early lead, the fugitive managed to disappear, sparking an intensive manhunt across the Sydney metropolitan area.
Dramatic Capture in Seven Hills
Officers finally tracked Angok down on Sunday afternoon, approximately 25 kilometres away in northwestern Sydney, specifically in the suburb of Seven Hills. The capture occurred around 4pm following a dramatic confrontation where Angok attempted to make another run for freedom before being subdued by police.
Criminal Background and Immigration Status
Michael Angok was convicted of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a gang rape that took place at Doonside park back in 2014, where he was one of four males involved in the night attack. He had already served his full prison sentence for this serious offence and was being held in custody as an immigration detainee awaiting deportation proceedings at the time of his escape.
Broader Political Context
The case highlights ongoing political tensions surrounding immigrants who have served prison sentences for crimes committed in Australia. This has become a particularly contentious issue since 2023, when the High Court ruled that keeping such individuals in indefinite detention was unlawful, leading to the release of a number of detainees.
While some of those released detainees had serious criminal convictions including murder and rape, others were convicted of less serious charges. All had completed their prison sentences before being placed in immigration detention due to visa complications and deportation proceedings.
Immigration Detention System Under Scrutiny
The escape from Bankstown Hospital on Wednesday and subsequent capture on Sunday raises significant questions about security protocols within the immigration detention system. The incident demonstrates how individuals with serious criminal histories can exploit vulnerabilities in transportation procedures between detention facilities and medical appointments.
Authorities have not yet released specific details about how Angok managed to escape during his hospital transfer or what security measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. The case continues to fuel debate about Australia's approach to handling non-citizens who have committed crimes while residing in the country.
