In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the community, seven-year-old Nyla May Bradshaw was discovered dead in a pond at Owston Hall golf course near Doncaster on Monday. The young girl, who was autistic, had been reported missing from the village of Skellow earlier that morning at 9.50am.
Mother's Desperate Search for Childcare on Facebook
Family friend Charlotte Emma, who is best friends with Nyla's mother Hailey, has revealed that the tragedy unfolded shortly after Hailey sought help finding a childminder through a local Facebook group. With school holidays approaching, Hailey was desperate for childcare assistance as Nyla typically attends a special school and is rarely left with others.
Recommended Autism Specialist
According to Charlotte, Hailey received a recommendation for someone who claimed to be an autism specialist through the Facebook group. This recommendation came just days before the tragic events unfolded, highlighting the risks associated with finding caregivers through unverified online platforms.
Within two hours of leaving Nyla with the newly recommended childminder, Hailey reportedly received a text message informing her that her daughter was missing. The search ended tragically when Nyla was found in the nearby pond shortly afterward.
Community in Mourning
Tributes have poured in from devastated family members and the local community. Nyla's mother Hailey described her daughter as her "sweet little girl" in emotional tributes that have circulated following the tragedy.
Charlotte Emma expressed the collective guilt felt by those close to the family, telling the Metro: "A lot of us blame ourselves because Hailey doesn't usually leave her with anybody, she goes to a special school. But the school holidays have come up and her mum was desperate for a child minder. She'd asked a Facebook group if anybody knew of any in the area."
Safety Concerns Raised
The incident has raised serious questions about the safety of finding childcare through social media platforms without proper vetting procedures. While Facebook groups can provide community recommendations, this tragedy underscores the importance of thorough background checks and verification when entrusting children to caregivers.
Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Nyla's death, though specific details about the childminder or any potential charges have not been disclosed at this time. The community remains in mourning as they come to terms with the loss of the young girl described by her mother as exceptionally sweet and cherished.
