Players Championship Disrupted by Fatal Shooting Near TPC Sawgrass
A tragic domestic violence incident unfolded late Friday evening in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, casting a shadow over the prestigious Players Championship. Two individuals were shot and killed in the parking lot of a Walgreens drug store, located approximately one mile from the TPC Sawgrass golf course where the tournament is being held.
Suspect Flees onto Golf Course, Sparking Manhunt
According to St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Christian Barrios, shot the two victims multiple times at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday. Hardwick described the situation as domestic in nature, indicating Barrios knew the victims. Following the shooting, Barrios fled the scene, with canine units pursuing him onto the grounds of the TPC Sawgrass course.
During his escape, Barrios reportedly picked up a PGA Tour radio before discarding it. He then stole a black BMW vehicle, leading authorities on a chase. Nassau County law enforcement, located about an hour north of Ponte Vedra Beach, pursued the car and forced it to crash into a wooded area early Saturday morning. Barrios attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended and taken into custody at approximately 8 a.m.
Tournament Operations Delayed Due to Security Concerns
In response to the ongoing security situation, PGA Tour officials made the decision to delay the opening of the gates for the third round of the Players Championship on Saturday. Citing 'operational considerations,' gates did not open until 9 a.m., a significant shift from the originally scheduled 8:15 a.m. start for the first groups. Hospitality areas experienced an even greater delay, not opening until 11 a.m.
The shooting and subsequent manhunt occurred in close proximity to the tournament's iconic 17th hole, a par-3 island green that is one of the most famous in golf.
