Lewis Hamilton Lauds Kimi Antonelli's Historic Pole Position

Lewis Hamilton has issued a glowing verdict on Kimi Antonelli after the young Italian driver shattered a Formula One record at the Chinese Grand Prix. Antonelli, aged just 19, became the youngest ever driver to secure a pole position in F1 history, narrowly edging out his Mercedes teammate George Russell during qualifying in Shanghai.

Hamilton's Light-Hearted Remark on Seat Replacement

At a press conference, Hamilton offered congratulations to Antonelli, who replaced him at Mercedes for the 2025 season after Hamilton's move to Ferrari. "I have to say big congratulations to this big lad here," Hamilton stated. "To Kimi, it's an amazing achievement, to come into [Mercedes]... and he took my seat and he hit it hard from the get go. So it's just really great to see him progressing and he really deserves it." Hamilton himself qualified in third place for Sunday's race, completing the top three positions.

Antonelli's Record-Breaking Performance

Antonelli managed to secure pole position with two attempts in the final qualifying session, capitalising on Russell's mechanical issues. Russell, who triumphed in Melbourne last weekend, experienced significant problems during Q3, including a car stoppage and gear-shifting difficulties. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff later explained that an electrical fault required power cycling the car three times, expressing surprise that Russell even managed to register a lap time.

Despite these challenges, Antonelli delivered a clean lap and expressed his satisfaction with the result. "For the first time in a long time in a qualifying session, I felt comfortable to push more and more after every set of tyres," Antonelli revealed. "It was very weird in Q2, the amount of understeer that appeared in the car and we couldn't fix it. I struggled a little bit there and had to make a lot of adjustments during the lap, just to help the balance, but it was a clean lap."

Russell's Setback and Team Dynamics

George Russell's qualifying session was marred by persistent mechanical problems that limited him to just one lap in Q3. The 28-year-old initially failed to restart his car after stopping on the track, then encountered further issues with gear shifting on his return to the Mercedes garage. Wolff acknowledged the difficulties but remained optimistic about the team's prospects for the race, noting that "the Ferraris will be pushing like crazy tomorrow, like they did today and in Melbourne. It's certainly going to be entertaining."

Antonelli, who finished second in Melbourne last weekend, now has a significant opportunity to claim his maiden victory in Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix. The young driver acknowledged the close competition with Russell, stating "Even if George had a second set, it would have been fairly close between us two. I'm happy with the result and there's a big opportunity ahead tomorrow."

This historic achievement marks a significant milestone in Antonelli's burgeoning career, with Hamilton's endorsement underscoring the young driver's rapid progression within the Mercedes team. The stage is set for an exciting race in Shanghai as Antonelli aims to convert his pole position into a victory, while Hamilton and Russell look to challenge from behind.
