Scottish Influencer Faces Jail for £150k Cannabis Smuggling

A prominent Scottish social media influencer is confronting the stark reality of a potential prison sentence after being apprehended for attempting to smuggle cannabis valued at over £150,000 into the United Kingdom. Ellie Crampsie, a 23-year-old from Glasgow and owner of the beauty enterprise Brows by Ellie, was intercepted by Border Force officers upon her arrival at Edinburgh Airport on April 16, 2025.

Discovery of the Contraband

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was informed this week that officials discovered 17 separate vacuum-sealed packages concealed within Crampsie's luggage. The packages contained a total of 17.7 kilograms of cannabis, a Class B drug, with an estimated street value ranging between £115,000 and £151,000. Crampsie had returned on an Air France flight, having travelled from Thailand with a connection in Paris.

The Court Proceedings

During her court appearance on Thursday, Ellie Crampsie entered a guilty plea to the charge of being concerned in the supply of cannabis. Prosecutor Emma Laing detailed the moment of apprehension, stating, "She was asked the usual questions by the officer and she confirmed she had travelled from Thailand. Her luggage was opened and a number of vacuum packages were within."

Defence agent Mr Hodge addressed the court, noting that his client is currently single and has "the benefit of the support of her parents who have attended court today." He requested the continuation of Crampsie's bail while a social work report is prepared, describing her prior criminal record as "unremarkable in the context of this offence."

Sentencing Adjourned

Sheriff Graeme Watson responded by adjourning the sentencing to allow for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty assessment. He continued Crampsie's bail conditions but cautioned, "That should be no prejudgment of what comes next, all sentencing options will be open to me on the next occasion, do you understand that?" This statement underscores that imprisonment remains a distinct possibility for the influencer.

Alarming Rise in Drug Smuggling Cases

This case emerges against a backdrop of a dramatic surge in Britons being caught smuggling drugs into the country from abroad. Recent data released by the National Crime Agency reveals an astonishing increase of 3,625 per cent in passengers apprehended for smuggling on airlines in recent years.

To illustrate this escalating trend:

  • In 2022, only 20 air passengers were arrested for attempting to import cannabis.
  • By 2023, this number had risen to 134 arrests.
  • In 2024, arrests skyrocketed to 745 airport passengers.
  • In just the first nine months of 2025, 680 air passengers were detained for cannabis smuggling.

Recent Parallel Cases

Ellie Crampsie's case is not isolated. Just last month, 25-year-old mother-of-three Nicole Hutchinson was jailed after being caught smuggling £100,000 worth of cannabis, which she claimed was to fund treatments for her beauty "obsession." Hutchinson was arrested at Manchester Airport alongside 28-year-old father-of-two Kia Underwood, with two suitcases containing nearly 50kg of the drug.

Additionally, last year, former nurse Levi-April Whalley, 31, received a suspended sentence after being apprehended attempting to smuggle over 35kg of cannabis, worth approximately £160,000, hidden inside two suitcases on a flight from New York to Birmingham.

The case of Ellie Crampsie highlights the severe legal consequences facing individuals involved in drug trafficking, particularly as authorities intensify efforts to combat the rising tide of narcotics smuggling into the UK through air travel.
