A 27-year-old Sudanese man has been arrested on suspicion of endangering life after four migrants drowned while attempting to cross the English Channel. The incident occurred on Thursday morning at Equihen-Plage, near Boulogne-sur-Mer in France, as two men and two women tried to climb onto a dinghy.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) confirmed that the suspect was arrested at the Manston processing centre in Kent. He remains in police custody as investigations continue. In a tragic turn, thirty-eight people were returned to the French shore following the event south of Boulogne-sur-Mer near Calais, but seventy-four migrants managed to travel on to the UK.
Government official Francois-Xavier Lauch, the prefect of Pas-de-Calais, described the scene, noting that the victims were "already quite far into the sea." He added, "The currents, which can be dangerous here, swept them away." This highlights the perilous conditions often faced by those attempting the crossing.
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations
In the wake of the tragedy, two children were among those taken to hospital as a precaution, and another person received treatment for hypothermia.
