Three men have been fatally shot at a Barbados beach bar known for hosting celebrities, in an incident that police describe as part of a spiralling gang-related conflict. The shooting occurred at Thunder Bay Beach Bar in Lower Carlton, St James, on Sunday night, leaving the local community in shock and authorities vowing to crack down on the violence.
Details of the Shooting Incident
Police reported that around 8.42pm, officers received reports of gunshots in the area, where a group of people had gathered on the beach. Investigations revealed that three men exited a silver vehicle and opened fire, injuring four males in total. One of the victims died at the scene after being examined by a medical doctor, while three others were transported by private vehicles to a medical facility. Tragically, two of those transported later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to three.
According to the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the deceased have been identified by relatives as Jamar Leron Edwards, 34, Lyle Anderson Robinson, 33, and Jamar Kareem Ramsay, 33. The identities highlight the human cost of the violence, with families now mourning their loss.
Government Response and Gang Violence Warning
Acting Attorney General Michael Lashley extended condolences to the families of those killed and injured, while issuing a stark warning about the state of gang-related retaliation in Barbados. 'On behalf of the government, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of those persons who passed away and deep regret to those who were injured in this recent and senseless violence in the country,' he said.
Lashley emphasised that the Barbados Police Service is actively pursuing its investigations with focus and urgency to bring those responsible to justice. However, he noted that 'it is clear that this apparent state of war between certain gangs of young men has gotten out of control, with retaliation present.' He declared that such behaviour will not be tolerated, stating that police and National Security forces will be empowered to use every law at their disposal to bring the situation under control.
'Let the word go out that from this moment, the police and our National Security forces will be empowered to use every law at their disposal to bring this situation under control and bring it to an end,' Lashley asserted. He urged every law-abiding citizen in Barbados to stand with the police service in this effort, calling for community support to combat the violence.
Celebrity Connections at Thunder Bay Beach Bar
The Thunder Bay Beach Bar has gained notoriety as a hotspot for celebrities, adding a layer of irony to the violent incident. The establishment has hosted a range of high-profile figures, from former England football captain Wayne Rooney to global superstar Rihanna. Their official Instagram page includes snapshots of these celebrities at the bar on separate occasions, showcasing its appeal to the rich and famous.
Most recently, Rihanna was spotted at the bar in August 2024, downing shots with friends as she celebrated her one-year-old son Riot. This connection underscores how the bar, typically associated with glamour and leisure, has now become the scene of a tragic shooting, highlighting the stark contrast between its celebrity clientele and the underlying social issues in the area.
The incident has raised concerns about safety in popular tourist destinations in Barbados, with authorities now facing pressure to address gang violence that threatens both locals and visitors. As investigations continue, the community awaits justice for the victims and hopes for a swift resolution to the escalating conflict.
