Thug Jailed for Strangling Mum Over Gym Lift Refusal

A violent thug has been imprisoned for strangling his own mother after she told him she could not provide a lift to the gym, in a shocking case of domestic abuse heard at Teesside Crown Court.

Elderly Victim Feared She Would Die

Andrew Malone, aged 52, launched a brutal attack on his elderly mother on October 15 last year, grabbing her by the throat and leaving her convinced she was going to die. The court heard how the assault occurred when Malone became enraged after his mother refused to drive him to the gym.

Knife Threat and Previous Incidents

In a separate incident, Malone retrieved a knife from a kitchen drawer, pointed it at his mother, and threatened to kill her, stating he would "do 20 years and spit on your grave." He later apologised and returned the knife, but the terror inflicted was severe.

Prosecutor Jenny Haigh detailed Malone's history of violence, including:

  • An arrest in 2024 when he refused to leave his mother's house while drunk and assaulted a police officer by bending his finger back.
  • Threats to burn down his mother's house with her inside on another occasion.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Malone appeared in court on April 2 for sentencing, having previously pleaded guilty to multiple charges:

  1. Threatening to kill his mother
  2. Intentional strangulation
  3. Assault occasioning actual bodily harm

Judge Jeremy Hill-Baker emphasised the severity of the crime, noting Malone's physical advantage over his mother and the petty nature of the grievance that escalated into life-threatening violence.

Victim's Heartbreaking Statement

In a statement read to the court, the victim expressed her devastation: "I don't understand why a son would do this to his mother. He's my only child. I cannot live this life with my son anymore."

Defence barrister Stephen Constantine acknowledged the irreparable breakdown in their relationship, with Malone stating he has no wish to see his mother again.

The case highlights the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the courage of victims in seeking justice, as the mother called 999 and supported prosecution despite her confusion and pain.
