Russian forces launched overnight strikes on gas production facilities in Ukraine, killing five people, just hours after President Vladimir Putin proposed a two-day ceasefire. The attack resulted in the deaths of three Naftogaz employees and two emergency service members, Ukrainian officials confirmed.
Zelensky Condemns Putin’s Truce Offer
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Putin of “utter cynicism,” asserting that the truce proposal was merely a ploy to protect Moscow’s upcoming military parade. Putin had announced a unilateral ceasefire for 8-9 May to mark Victory Day, the 81st anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat.
Ukraine’s Counter-Proposal
In response, Zelensky issued his own open-ended ceasefire proposal, stating that Ukraine would observe a truce from 12am on Wednesday and react accordingly to any Russian actions thereafter. He mocked Russia’s equipment-free May 9 parade, suggesting that Moscow fears drone attacks.
The strikes underscore the fragility of any potential truce, as both sides remain deeply entrenched in conflict. International observers have called for immediate de-escalation, but tensions remain high.
