Jutta Leerdam Skips Winter Olympics Opening Amid 'Diva' Criticism
Leerdam Skips Opening Ceremony After Private Jet Backlash

Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam, the fiancée of internet personality Jake Paul, notably absented herself from the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday evening. This decision followed substantial criticism directed at her for perceived 'diva' behavior, primarily centered on her choice to travel to the Milan-Cortina Games via private jet.

Ceremony Snub and Social Media Post

As athletes from across the globe paraded through Milan's San Siro stadium to mark the official commencement of the Games, Leerdam was conspicuously absent. Instead of participating, the Netherlands star opted to watch the event from her bed, sharing a picture of the Dutch team's march on her Instagram story. She accompanied the post with the Dutch flag and a heart emoji, offering remote support to her teammates.

Backlash Over Private Jet Travel

The controversy stems from Leerdam's documented journey to the Olympics earlier in the week. She posted images on Instagram showcasing a private flight arranged for her and her entourage. The jet was decorated with custom flags and featured handmade cupcakes bearing supportive messages. Furthermore, the aircraft's television screen displayed an orange background with Leerdam's picture, a gesture that amplified the criticism.

Jake Paul commented "Time to shine" on the post. Upon arrival, Leerdam reportedly used a private car to travel to the athletes' village with friends, posing for selfies in front of the Olympic rings before beginning her training sessions.

Strong Criticism from Dutch Media

Leerdam's actions have reportedly caused significant discontent in her home country. Former Dutch soccer player and analyst Johan Derksen delivered a scathing assessment, labeling her behavior "horrible" and akin to that of a diva. He stated, "She's already living like a millionaire, with private jets and everything. If I were her coach, I wouldn't tolerate that. Gradually the whole of the Netherlands is starting to get a bit fed up with her behavior."

Adding to the critique, De Telegraaf analyst Valentijn Driessen noted the overwhelming promotional focus on Leerdam, revealing, "Everywhere along the highway you see: 'Support Jutta, support Jutta'. I think she's the only Dutch representative for the entire Olympic Games."

Leerdam's Athletic Credentials

While her relationship with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has increased her public profile, Jutta Leerdam has established a formidable reputation in her own right. She is a highly accomplished speed skater, having secured multiple World Championship titles and an Olympic silver medal at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.

Team USA Faces Hostile Reception

In a separate incident during the same opening ceremony, Team USA and Vice President JD Vance encountered a chorus of boos from Italian spectators inside the stadium. The jeering intensified when Vance appeared on screen, linked to recent protests against the deployment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the Olympic event.

Despite the hostile reception, Team USA flagbearers—speed skater Erin Jackson and bobsleigh athlete Frankie del Luca—along with Vice President Vance, maintained positive demeanors as they acknowledged the crowd.
