While significant progress has been made in helmet safety through advancements in shell and padding technology, which have helped lower the overall rate of concussions, a pressing concern remains. According to data collected by the NFL, 44% of in-game concussions during the past season resulted from impacts to the player's facemask. This figure represents a notable increase from 29% in 2015, highlighting the urgent need for targeted innovation in this area.
Jeff Miller, the NFL's executive vice president overseeing player health and safety, emphasized the importance of this initiative. Selected winners of the challenge will receive up to $100,000 in aggregate funding. Additionally, they will benefit from expert development support to facilitate the transition of their concepts from the laboratory to the playing field.
