Ben Shephard was forced to apologise to a guest just minutes into an interview on This Morning after the 88-year-old marathon runner had to sprint to the studio.
Runner's Chaotic Morning
During Monday's episode (April 27), Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley spoke to four extraordinary runners who participated in the London Marathon on Sunday (April 26). However, before the interviews began, one of the runners, Harry, 88, shared his chaotic experience. The vehicle scheduled to pick him up was late, forcing him to run to the studio.
Harry explained, "The vehicle was about half an hour late." He was then told, "If you run up that street there, you'll get there." Amazed, Ben admitted he didn't think he would have the energy to run again after completing the marathon the previous day.
Ben's Apology
Later in the show, Ben, who also ran the marathon on Sunday, said to the guests: "Thank you for joining us today. Thank you for running from the station as well, Harry. I'm so sorry about that. I don't think I would be running for a week!"
Ben finished the race in 3 hours and 29 minutes. He told his guests: "It hurt a lot but I got carried along by the crowd and all the people and all the other runners as well. So it's been a privilege to have you all on today."
Ben's Marathon Preparation
The 51-year-old previously told Men's Health that he had planned to finish the race in under four hours but didn't want to put too much pressure on himself. He said, "The plan is 30g of carbs every 20 minutes. But for the first hour, I'll do a gel every 30 minutes, which I think should be enough, so around 90g of carbs an hour."
He added, "I don't think I've planned my long training runs very well with fuelling, so that's the one concern I have for Sunday. I've done plenty of training and feel like I'm in pretty good shape, but I have left it a bit to chance, and I'm fixating on it a little bit."
He continued, "I'm working the night before, so I'm not going to get much sleep, but that's fine. I'll get up early because I need to get things moving and, you know, sort all that out. But breakfast will be really high carb."
Last year, the This Morning presenter hit headlines after appearing topless on the cover of Men's Health magazine to honour his 50th birthday.
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
