Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has broken his silence regarding the newly released Jeffrey Epstein files, which contain references to him by name. In his first public comments on the scandal involving the late paedophile financier, Gates expressed regret for spending time with Epstein but firmly dismissed the emails as "false."
Gates Denies Epstein's Allegations
In an interview with Australian outlet 9News, Gates addressed the allegations head-on. He stated, "Apparently, Jeffrey wrote an email to himself. That email was never sent. The email is false." Gates went on to question Epstein's motives, adding, "I don't know what his thinking was there. Was he trying to attack me in some way? Every minute I spent with him, I regret, and I apologise that I did that."
Details of Their Association
Gates revealed that he first met Epstein in 2011 and had multiple dinners with him over a three-year period. However, he emphasised that he never visited Epstein's private island or had any relations with women connected to the financier. Gates explained that his initial interest in Epstein stemmed from the latter's claims of being able to secure donations from wealthy individuals for global health initiatives.
"The focus was always, he knew a lot of very rich people, and he was saying he could get them to give money to global health. In retrospect, that was a dead end," Gates admitted. He further reflected, "I was foolish to spend time with him. I was one of many people who regret ever knowing him. The more that comes out, the more clear it will be that, although the time was a mistake, it has nothing to do with that kind of behaviour."
Content of the Released Files
Among the millions of documents recently released by the US Department of Justice is an unsent email from Jeffrey Epstein. In it, Epstein makes lurid claims about Gates, alleging that the Microsoft co-founder asked for antibiotics to "surreptitiously give" to his then-wife Melinda after contracting a sexually transmitted infection from "Russian girls."
A spokesman for Gates has previously labelled these claims as "absurd" and "completely false." The new comments from Gates himself reinforce this stance, as he categorically denies the veracity of the email's contents.
Melinda Gates' Response
Speaking about the new claims, Melinda Gates shared her perspective on NPR's Wild Card podcast. She said, "For me, it's personally hard whenever those details come up, right? Because it brings back memories of some very, very painful times in my marriage."
Melinda added, "Whatever questions remain there... for those people, and for even my ex-husband, they need to answer to those things, not me. And I am so happy to be away from all the muck that was there. No girl should ever be put in the situation that they were put in by Epstein and whatever was going on with all of the various people around him. No girl."
She concluded with a poignant reflection, "I mean, it’s just - it’s beyond heartbreaking. I remember being those ages those girls were. I remember my daughters being those ages."
Broader Implications
The release of the Epstein files has reignited public scrutiny of the financier's extensive network of high-profile associates. Gates' decision to speak out marks a significant moment in the ongoing discourse, as he becomes one of the few prominent figures to directly address the allegations contained within the documents.
His comments highlight the complex dynamics at play, where individuals like Gates were drawn to Epstein's purported philanthropic connections, only to later realise the grave errors in judgment. The scandal continues to unfold, with each new revelation shedding light on the dark legacy of Jeffrey Epstein and those who crossed his path.
