Coronation Street fans were left furious when George Shuttleworth was arrested on Tuesday night's episode as part of the soap's latest whodunnit storyline. The undertaker, played by Tony Maudsley since 2020, became entangled in the ordeal of his surrogate son Todd Grimshaw, who had been a victim of abuse at the hands of partner Theo Silverton.
Flashforward Leads to Murder Week
As part of a controversial flashforward that culminated in Murder Week, where the same day was repeated, Theo was one of five potential villains set to be killed off. He was found dead at the bottom of some scaffolding, leading to a lengthy whodunnit for viewers.
George Taken in for Questioning
In Tuesday's episode, kindly George was taken in for questioning by DS Lisa Swain, who has a history of blaming the wrong person, having previously locked Roy Cropper up for murder and recently putting innocent Dev Alahan in a cell. Theo's death followed a harrowing confrontation with Todd in the flat, during which George rushed to his aid. He was arrested because he had Theo's blood on his shirt.
In the interview room, Swain pressed George, who admitted hitting Theo but explained that he and Todd locked him in the bathroom and fled to call the police. Swain questioned why George went for a walk instead of staying home, leaving no one to confirm his account. Back at number eleven, partner Christina grew worried, realizing that only the murderer knows who killed Theo. Christina herself is set to become a suspect, according to recent spoilers.
Official Suspects Revealed
George is one of six official suspects, including Todd's daughter Summer Spellman, Todd himself, Theo's former colleague Gary Windass, and Theo's ex-wife Danielle Silverton. The first three interrogated are Todd, George, and Gary.
Fans reacted strongly on social media. One wrote on X: "I’ve never been more certain of someone’s innocence!!!!" Another said: "Poor George is a nervous wreck being interviewed by DS Swain." A third added: "Why is DS Swain so unpleasant? Would she really be interviewing George!" Another raged: "Another ridiculous storyline where we all know, except for the Keystone cops of #Corrie know that George did nothing!"
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
