Sarah Ferguson's charitable organisation, Sarah's Trust, has declared it will shut down "for the foreseeable future" in the wake of fresh revelations concerning the former duchess's association with the convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Charity Announces Closure Following Epstein Document Release
The announcement comes just days after the United States Department of Justice published over three million documents related to Epstein, which appear to shed further light on his connections with both Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
A spokesperson for Sarah's Trust stated on Monday evening: "Our chair Sarah Ferguson and the board of trustees have agreed that with regret the charity will shortly close for the foreseeable future."
"This has been under discussion and in train for several months," the statement elaborated. "We remain exceptionally proud of the trust's work over recent years."
Extensive Charitable Work Now Ceasing
The charity highlighted its significant global impact during its operational period, detailing:
- Partnerships with more than 60 other charitable organisations across over 20 different countries
- Delivery of over 150,000 aid parcels throughout the Covid-19 pandemic
- Provision of medical aid and training for individuals affected by the conflict in Ukraine
- Educational support for more than 200 children in Ghana
Its projects spanned education, healthcare, crisis response, and environmental initiatives, representing a substantial philanthropic endeavour now coming to an unexpected halt.
Previous Patronage Losses Preceded Closure
This development follows months of mounting pressure on the Duchess of York's charitable associations. Earlier this year, seven prominent charities severed ties with Ferguson as their patron after leaked emails surfaced that appeared to show her apologising to Epstein for disowning him.
The organisations that withdrew their patronage include:
- Children's hospice Julia's House
- Food allergy charity The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation
- Prevent Breast Cancer
- The Teenage Cancer Trust
- The British Heart Foundation
- The National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA)
- The Children's Literacy Charity
These withdrawals, reported by the BBC, represented a significant erosion of Ferguson's charitable standing even before the latest document revelations emerged from US authorities.
Ongoing Fallout from Epstein Associations
The closure of Sarah's Trust marks the latest chapter in the ongoing repercussions stemming from associations with Jeffrey Epstein, whose extensive network of wealthy and influential contacts continues to face scrutiny years after his death.
While the charity emphasised that closure plans had been in discussion for months, the timing immediately following the release of detailed Epstein documents suggests the revelations have accelerated or influenced the decision-making process.
The situation underscores how historical associations with controversial figures can have lasting consequences for charitable organisations and their founders, even when those organisations have delivered substantial humanitarian work.
