BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay was forced to apologise after an awkward name blunder live on air during Monday's (May 6) episode. Co-hosting alongside Sarah Campbell, Jon mistakenly referred to Hollywood star Ralph Macchio as 'Ray' while discussing the Karate Kid musical's UK tour.
The Awkward Moment
The mishap occurred as the presenters talked about the stage adaptation of the 1984 classic film. After a pre-recorded report from Entertainment Correspondent Colin Paterson, who introduced original Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio to the musical's lead, 19-year-old Gina Uccello, the show returned to the studio. Sarah Campbell remarked, '1984 Karate Kid,' to which Jon Kay responded, 'And Ray hasn’t changed.' Sarah quickly corrected him, saying, 'It’s Ralph.' A flustered Jon replied, 'Ralph. Sorry Ray.. Ralph.' Sarah burst into laughter, adding, 'It looks really good, all that waxing on and waxing off.'
Jon's Recovery
Attempting to move on, Jon swiftly said, 'Right, it’s time to get the news, travel and weather where you are.' The blunder left viewers amused, but Jon handled it with grace, acknowledging his mistake.
The Karate Kid Legacy
The original film, written by Robert Mark Kamen, follows Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), teaching that karate is about balance, dignity, and respect. The movie became a cultural phenomenon, spawning sequels, a 2010 remake, and the Netflix series Cobra Kai. The musical premiered in St. Louis in 2022 to sold-out audiences and is now touring the UK. Kamen remarked, 'Who knew that 43 years after I wrote the original script, we would see these characters acting and singing on the British stage in a story as fresh and universally relevant as it was four decades ago.'
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
