Reform's Yusuf Dodges Question Five Times on Question Time

BBC Question Time descended into chaos on Thursday night as Reform UK's Zia Yusuf repeatedly refused to answer a question from host Fiona Bruce about pothole spending in a Reform-controlled council. The incident occurred during the programme recorded in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

Panel and Initial Topics

The panel included Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, Conservative MP Victoria Atkins, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper, Reform UK's Zia Yusuf, and Green Party Co-deputy Leader Rachel Millward. The first topic was protecting the Jewish community after a horrific attack in Golders Green, North London, earlier this week.

Pothole Question Sparks Confrontation

When the floor opened to audience questions, a member of the public raised concerns about trust in local councils, focusing on potholes. Yusuf defended councils, saying budgets are often pre-allocated and that money designated for potholes doesn't always get spent on them.

Bruce then pressed Yusuf directly: "That seems to be the case with one of your councils, according to an FOI, potholes spending in North Warwickshire under Reform has dropped by nearly 50%, is that right?" Yusuf responded that people should not judge a council by spending alone.

Bruce interjected: "Well hang on, people want to know, hang on! Potholes come up every week on Question Time. Is it true? Is the council spending 50% less on potholes?" Yusuf tried to dismiss her, saying "Fiona, with respect--," but she cut him off: "With respect, I'm asking you that question."

Yusuf then defended Reform, arguing businesses shouldn't focus on spending "as much money as possible" and that they wouldn't last long if they did. Bruce asked again: "But is it right?" Yusuf continued to deflect, raging that money in the country is "wasted."

Fifth Attempt Fails

In her fifth attempt, Bruce said: "Do you want to answer the question? Zia I want to give it one more go. Has pothole spending in North Warwickshire under Reform dropped by more than half?" Yusuf refused, saying he's "not across that precise bit of detail," but claimed no party controlling councils has been more successful at fixing potholes than Reform.

The audience reacted with frustration as the exchange highlighted ongoing tensions over local government spending. BBC Question Time returns on Friday May 8 in London.
