Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has expressed deep concern over the club's current form, describing them as a 'wounded animal' following a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Brighton. He insists that winning the FA Cup is now essential to salvage their season.
Record-Breaking Slump
Tuesday's loss at the Amex Stadium marked a new low for Chelsea under manager Liam Rosenior. It was their fifth consecutive defeat without scoring a single goal, a feat not witnessed since 1912. The result also allowed Brighton to leapfrog them into sixth place, seizing control of the battle for European qualification.
The pressure on Rosenior is mounting ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United. Cahill, who won the FA Cup twice during his time at Stamford Bridge, is deeply worried about the team's mentality.
Cahill's Warnings
'Leeds are probably watching this thinking, we've got a wounded animal here, we've got a chance in the semi-final,' Cahill told Sky Sports. 'Chelsea are going into a semi-final against Leeds, no disrespect, with an opportunity to hit a final. They should be licking their lips, ready to go, but this is a bit of a wounded Chelsea squad.'
The former England international highlighted the importance of confidence and momentum. 'Confidence and momentum is a big thing, so going into tomorrow's training, it's not the same vibe when you are on a good run or off the back of a good result. It's going to be a tough few days for the manager and for the squad to galvanise themselves and get fired up for this semi-final.'
Cahill did not mince words about the stakes. 'The FA Cup now is, strong word, it's a must to save the season. It needs to be a hell of a lot better.'
