Mother of Iraq War Veteran Speaks Out After Son's Arm Broken in Senate Incident

The mother of an Iraq War veteran whose arm was audibly broken during a protest at a Senate hearing has described her son as a "wonderful" person who can become "kind of riled up" about certain political issues. Mary Lou McGinnis spoke exclusively to The Independent about the incident involving her 44-year-old son, Brian McGinnis, a Marine Corps veteran and working firefighter.

Protest Turns Violent in Senate Chamber

On Wednesday afternoon, Brian McGinnis interrupted a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee hearing while wearing his Marine Corps dress blues. The Iraq War veteran and Green Party Senate candidate shouted, "America does not want to send its sons and daughters to war for Israel!" as he condemned joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran.

As Capitol Police officers attempted to remove McGinnis from the chamber, his left arm became wedged in a door frame. Senator Tim Sheehy, a Montana Republican and former Navy SEAL, joined the struggle and grabbed McGinnis's arm, resulting in a loud snapping sound captured on now-viral footage.

Family Background and Military Service

Speaking from her home in Quincy, Illinois, Mary Lou McGinnis expressed deep concern for her "wonderful boy" and worried about potential repercussions with his employment at the Raleigh Fire Department. She described her son as a devoted father of four young children who was class president in high school.

"He's a great dad, he was class president in high school. Just a wonderful person to be around, but in this case, he got in a little too deep, it sounds like," she told The Independent.

According to his campaign website, McGinnis graduated from high school in June 2000 and reported to Marine boot camp the following Monday. He made the All-Marine boxing team in 2003 and deployed to Iraq that same year as a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman.

Political Awakening and Personal Connections

Mary Lou McGinnis explained that her son's perspective on Middle East politics evolved during his military service. "When he was in Iraq, he started sort of wondering," she said. "He wasn't quite sure what he was doing there, and he had questions about all that."

After returning from war, McGinnis met and married Hamadee, a woman of Palestinian background. The couple has four children together, and McGinnis has become increasingly vocal about Palestinian rights. In 2024, he made local headlines for helping bring aid into Gaza with the volunteer group "Freedom Flotilla Coalition."

Legal Consequences and Public Response

McGinnis was hospitalized following the incident and now faces charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and unlawful demonstration. Capitol Police described him as "an unruly man who started to illegally protest during a hearing" who "put everyone in a dangerous position by violently resisting."

Senator Sheehy later claimed on social media that he was trying to "de-escalate the situation," calling McGinnis an "unhinged protester" who was "fighting back."

Despite the official response, a GoFundMe campaign launched by McGinnis's wife's cousin has raised significant support, nearing its $70,000 goal. The campaign statement read: "When Brian stood up to speak inside the United States Capitol, he was exercising one of the most basic rights Americans are supposed to have."

Mother's Perspective on Her Son's Character

Mary Lou McGinnis emphasized her son's generally peaceful nature despite the violent incident. "I'm crazy about him," she said. "He's wonderful to me, he's made lots of plane trips home. He's a loving, caring person, not a fighter in any way, except I guess in the service."

She acknowledged his passionate nature regarding certain subjects, particularly those connected to his wife's family and the situation in Gaza. "Certain subjects, I guess he's gotten kind of riled up about," she explained. "Gaza, his wife's family and all, he has strong feelings."

The mother concluded with mixed emotions about the incident and her son's actions: "He really is a wonderful guy... He's just kind of out there sometimes."
