AFL Wife's Halftime Fine Dining Excursion Ignites Social Media Storm
Alexandra Merrett, the wife of Essendon Bombers star Zach Merrett, has stirred controversy by departing her husband's AFL match at halftime to indulge in a meal and wine at one of Melbourne's most exclusive restaurants, capturing the experience in a TikTok video. The incident occurred during Sunday night's game at Marvel Stadium, where the Bombers were being soundly defeated by the Western Bulldogs, managing only a single goal by the time Alexandra exited the venue.
Luxury Dining Replaces Disappointing Football
In her TikTok post, Alexandra showcased herself finishing a plate of food and sipping a glass of wine at Gimlet, a renowned high-end bar and eatery in the city where cocktails can fetch up to $65. She captioned the clip with a humorous remark: 'When your husband's team is losing by 50 points at half time so you go to gimlet instead.' At the main break, Essendon was actually trailing by 54 points, though they mounted a partial comeback to win the third quarter before ultimately falling 14.15 (99) to 9.11 (65).
Some football fans playfully chided Mrs. Merrett for not staying to witness the match's outcome. Comments included: 'But that second half! You lowkey missed out girl, we finally won,' and 'Look what happens when you leave,' with another adding, 'Go back GF! We've got some fight back in us.'
Criticism from AFL Legends and Commentators
The video has drawn pointed criticism from former AFL stars turned commentators. Richmond legend Matthew Richardson expressed disapproval on radio station 3AW, stating, 'It's not something I would like out of my partner if I was in that situation.' He acknowledged the changing times with social media but noted, 'It's probably not something where you want more attention brought to yourself.'
Recently retired Carlton star Sam Docherty also voiced concerns, suggesting the clip complicates Zach Merrett's efforts to mend relationships with fans, the club, and teammates. 'The fact of the matter is it's just really not helping Zach's relationship to mend with the fans and the club and the playing group,' Docherty remarked. He questioned the value of posting such content, warning it could create divisions within the football community.
Zach Merrett's Season Under Scrutiny
This social media episode follows a period of intense scrutiny for Zach Merrett at the start of the AFL season, stemming from his failed trade to Hawthorn last year. Widely regarded as one of Essendon's top players since his debut in 2014, the 30-year-old relinquished the captaincy after the move fell through. He has since been reintegrated into the club's leadership meetings and earned praise from coach Brad Scott for his performance in the second half against the Bulldogs.
When asked about the TikTok post, Bombers skipper Andrew McGrath responded on 3AW, 'I wasn't aware of that. I don't really have too much of a view on it. What people do in their private lives is up to them.' He emphasized Merrett's commitment, saying, 'We know full well that Zach has really bought into what we're doing. He's as passionate as I've ever seen him.'
Essendon's Ongoing Struggles
The Bombers' loss to the Bulldogs marks their 17th consecutive defeat, a streak that includes last season's 13-game losing run plagued by injuries. This unfortunate record echoes a similar period in 2016 when players were suspended due to the supplements saga. Essendon next faces Melbourne at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.
Coach Brad Scott addressed the losing streak post-match, stating, 'It's just a fact that can't be argued. There's no point. No one puts the number up with an asterisk next to it and says 'For 90 per cent of those games, you could hardly field a team'. No one cares about that. And I don't care either.' He highlighted the challenge of keeping the team motivated and performing under such circumstances.
