The Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Association has formally accused an Italian soldier serving with the European Union Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR) of conducting surveillance on a training session ahead of the decisive World Cup play-off final between the two nations. This incident has cast a shadow over preparations for the high-stakes match scheduled for Tuesday night at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica.
Training Session Filmed by Soldier
Bosnia's preparation for the crunch encounter has been severely disrupted by controversy after a EUFOR soldier, widely reported to be Italian, was observed filming the national team's training session in Butmir on Sunday. Emerging reports from Bosnian media indicate that the soldier was positioned behind a fence, recording players as they underwent their drills.
Security personnel and staff members reportedly approached the individual after noticing he had been recording for over fifteen minutes, demanding that he cease filming immediately. The training ground in Butmir, which lacks adequate protection for such a significant match, was open to the public, with only a small metal fence separating the players from onlookers.
Formal Complaint Lodged
The Bosnian FA has now submitted an official complaint to EUFOR, which is stationed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to Sportsport.BA, the filming constituted a direct attempt by the Italian national team to gather intelligence on Bosnia's tactical plans as Italy seeks to qualify for its first World Cup in twelve years.
A photograph of a man wearing a camouflage jacket behind the barrier has gone viral on social media platforms. However, there is currently no concrete evidence linking him directly to the Italian national team or the staff of manager Gennaro Gattuso.
Italy's World Cup Ambitions
Italy is on the verge of securing its first World Cup appearance since 2014, when the team was eliminated in the group stage. The Azzurri advanced to the play-off final after a 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland in Bergamo last week. Despite being clear favourites to book their tickets to North America, the Italian squad has faced criticism for perceived arrogance.
Following their semi-final triumph, Italy was accused of showing disrespect and arrogance after footage surfaced online depicting players, including Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, celebrating Wales's loss to Bosnia from a box at the New Balance Era in Bergamo.
Dzeko Responds to Controversy
Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko has addressed the video, suggesting that all the pressure is now on Italy, which has been knocked out in the play-offs ahead of the last two tournaments. I don’t know why Italy preferred not to play in Wales; we went there without fear and won, Dzeko stated after Bosnia's penalty shootout victory in Cardiff.
The 40-year-old added: Italy are an incredible national team, having won four World Cups. If they’re afraid to play in Wales, something isn’t right. After failing to qualify for the last two World Cups, they’re now playing for a lot. Dzeko also mentioned that Inter Milan defender Federico Dimarco contacted him to clarify that no offence was intended, to which Dzeko replied that he held no personal grievance.
Everyone has their own preferences; that’s normal. I can’t celebrate, because I would have preferred to avoid Italy in the final, Dzeko remarked. You have to be careful and smart, especially nowadays with social media, where everything gets blown out of proportion.
The spying allegation adds a layer of tension to an already pivotal match, with both teams vying for a coveted spot in the World Cup. The incident underscores the intense scrutiny and high stakes surrounding international football qualifiers, where even minor controversies can escalate rapidly in the digital age.
