Jamie Carragher's Liverpool Transfer Blueprint for Life After Mohamed Salah
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has lauded Mohamed Salah's remarkable consistency and durability as the club braces for the departure of one of its greatest ever players. In an exclusive interview with the ECHO at the Titanic Hotel in April 2026, Carragher reflected on Salah's illustrious career and outlined a potential transfer strategy to replace the Egyptian superstar.
Salah's Unmatched Legacy at Anfield
Mohamed Salah, who announced last month that this season will be his last at Liverpool, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. Since joining from Roma in 2017 for approximately £36 million, he has become the club's third-highest scorer of all time with 255 goals. His tenure includes two Premier League titles, a Champions League triumph, two Carabao Cups, an FA Cup in 2022, and the Club World Cup in December 2019.
Carragher, who made 737 appearances for Liverpool and lifted the Champions League in 2005, emphasized Salah's scoring prowess but highlighted his availability as a key strength. "The thing I love about him is he plays every game, he wants to play every game, he wants to break records," Carragher stated. "He's got that mentality, I can assure you, having been at Liverpool for so long, not every player has got that."
Salah's durability is underscored by his appearance record: he has featured in 436 of 496 Liverpool fixtures since his arrival and played 323 times out of a possible 335 in the Premier League. Carragher praised this consistency, noting that it sets a high standard for any successor.
Carragher's Vision for Salah's Replacement
As Liverpool shifts focus to identifying a replacement for Salah on the right flank, Carragher dismissed the notion that any player is irreplaceable. He suggested that the club's recruitment team might consider a different style of winger rather than seeking a direct like-for-like substitute.
"I never go along with it when someone says they are irreplaceable," Carragher explained. "Go through the players we've had over the years at this football club and for me, whether you think he is a right-winger or not, he is a goalscorer, that is what he is."
He pointed to past Liverpool strikers like Luis Suarez, Michael Owen, and Robbie Fowler as examples of players who have left big shoes to fill but were eventually replaced. Carragher proposed that Liverpool could target a winger who focuses more on creating chances for central strikers, rather than solely on goal-scoring.
"You might get a different type of right-winger, someone who is creating for the central strikers," he added. "So I don't think he is irreplaceable and I don't think it is the case either that Liverpool need to go and sign a superstar as such. Mo Salah wasn't a superstar when we signed him."
Lessons from Liverpool's Transfer History
Carragher cautioned against pursuing high-profile signings for the sake of star power, referencing recent acquisitions that have not fully met expectations. "We bought superstars last summer, didn't we? And it hasn't quite worked out as of yet," he remarked. "Buy the right player for the right reasons, that is what Liverpool need to get back to."
He recalled Salah's initial uncertainty upon joining Liverpool, where the forward was unsure about his position due to Sadio Mane's presence on the right. "It just shows where he has gone from that," Carragher said, highlighting Salah's transformation into a global icon.
Carragher's insights underscore the strategic thinking required as Liverpool navigates this transitional period. With Salah's departure marking the end of an era, the club faces the challenge of maintaining its competitive edge while honoring the legacy of one of its all-time greats.
