De Zerbi's Tottenham Tenure Begins with Defeat at Sunderland
Roberto De Zerbi's highly anticipated debut as Tottenham Hotspur manager ended in disappointment as his side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Italian, who replaced the departed Igor Tudor last month, was unable to inspire an immediate turnaround for a Spurs team languishing in the Premier League relegation zone.
Mukiele's Deflected Strike Seals Sunderland Victory
The decisive moment arrived in the 61st minute when Nordi Mukiele cut in from the right flank and unleashed a strike that took a cruel deflection off Micky van de Ven's foot, wrong-footing goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and nestling in the net. This goal proved sufficient for Regis Le Bris's Sunderland to secure consecutive league victories, heaping further pressure on Tottenham's precarious position.
Spurs entered the contest already in the bottom three following West Ham's victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday. Despite making five changes from their previous outing against Nottingham Forest, including a surprise start for goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky—making his first appearance since a Champions League nightmare against Atletico Madrid—De Zerbi's tactical adjustments failed to yield the desired impact.
Missed Opportunities and VAR Controversy
The first half was an open affair with both teams creating clear chances. Brian Brobbey, Richarlison, and Dominic Solanke all went close, while Pedro Porro saw an early effort saved by Sunderland's Robin Roefs. Tottenham thought they had won a penalty in the 21st minute when Randal Kolo Muani was adjudged to have been fouled in the area, but referee Rob Jones overturned the decision after a VAR consultation, ruling that Omar Alderete had cleanly won the ball.
Kinsky made several important saves to deny Brobbey and keep Spurs in the game, while at the other end, Roefs was equally vigilant to thwart Solanke and Richarlison. Granit Xhaka also came close with a vicious strike that whistled past the post, but Sunderland's resilience ultimately paid dividends.
Injury Scare and Frantic Finale
The match took a worrying turn when Cristian Romero and Kinsky collided following a triple substitution by De Zerbi, which introduced Mathys Tel, Joao Palhinha, and Pape Matar Sarr. After a lengthy stoppage, Kinsky continued with a bandaged head, but a tearful Romero was replaced by Kevin Danso.
Spurs were granted 11 minutes of added time to salvage a point, and Porro came agonizingly close with a free-kick and a powerful strike, both superbly pushed over by Roefs. However, Tottenham could not find the breakthrough, succumbing to their 16th league defeat of the season and remaining without a Premier League victory in 2026.
This result leaves Tottenham two points adrift in the relegation zone with only six matches remaining, casting a dark shadow over De Zerbi's new era and intensifying the club's fight for survival.
