Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has delivered a defiant message in the Premier League title race, declaring that the club's past achievements mean nothing as they target leaders Arsenal.
Title Hunger Undiminished by Past Success
The Portuguese centre-back, who has won the league in each of his four seasons at the Etihad Stadium, emphasised an insatiable appetite for more silverware. City have cut the gap to just two points behind Mikel Arteta's side after a run of five consecutive victories heading into the festive period.
Dias explained the relentless mindset required at the champions, telling Daily Mail Sport: 'I knew the pressure of joining this club when I joined. When you sign and play for Manchester City, you are expected to win football matches and win trophies. It's as simple as that.'
He expressed pride in his contributions but was crystal clear about the ongoing demand. 'I'm proud to have contributed to the many trophies we have won in recent years, but I also know it's never enough. We have to keep winning,' Dias stated.
The 28-year-old pointed to last season's intense battle as a warning, adding: 'Last year showed that if you are not at the level then you won't be close. We've got to be close this year and keep fighting as we have in recent weeks.'
Community Commitment in Manchester
Beyond the pitch, Dias revealed his deep connection to the city he now calls home. Last week, he and striker Erling Haaland visited the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital as part of the club's 'Christmas, Together' campaign. The initiative has raised over £150,000 for year-round projects at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House charity.
'As one of the captains – I know I have not just a responsibility for my team, but also the club and the city,' Dias said. 'I love this club, the fans and the city of Manchester. It is my home now and I am settled.'
He stressed his desire to use his platform positively: 'I care about helping people and if I can use my platform to do that in a positive way then it's something I am going to do. Putting smiles on faces, helping those who are less fortunate, it's something that brings me great joy.'
Guardiola's Festive Focus
The squad's brief festive break comes with a warning from manager Pep Guardiola. The City boss has given his players three days off before they reconvene for training on Christmas Day, with a strict reminder that their physical condition will be closely monitored upon return.
City's immediate focus is their Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, as they aim to maintain their winning momentum and keep the pressure firmly on Arsenal at the top of the table.
