Grand National Enthusiasts Uncover Identity Behind Monumental £100,000 Wager

Horse racing aficionados have embarked on a detective mission to pinpoint the individual responsible for an extraordinary £100,000 stake placed on I Am Maximus prior to its triumphant victory at the Grand National. This colossal bet, disclosed by bookmaker Johnny Dineen during an ITV broadcast, stands as the most substantial wager he has ever accepted in his career.

Record-Breaking Bet Yields Staggering £800,000 Profit

The wager was positioned on I Am Maximus at odds of 8-1, with the horse ultimately clinching the race under jockey Paul Townend. This outcome generated an incredible £800,000 profit for the punter. I Am Maximus, a ten-year-old steed trained by Willie Mullins, had previously won the Grand National in 2024 and secured a runner-up position in the subsequent year's event.

During the pre-race coverage, Dineen expressed his astonishment, stating, "We’ve laid a whopping bet on I Am Maximus, and it’s the biggest bet we’ve ever laid by a mile." His revelation left betting ring presenter Brian Gleeson visibly shocked, who could only exclaim, "Oh my God."

Suspicion Falls on Owner JP McManus

Speculation among the racing community strongly suggests that the bet was placed by none other than JP McManus, the owner of I Am Maximus. Supporters on social media platform X have voiced their convictions, with one user remarking, "Hearing it was JP McManus that put it on. They made it out like an ordinary raceday goer put it on." Another commenter added, "Spare change for JP McManus. He’d probably of had 10x that on, if someone would take the bet."

When questioned about whether he had wagered on the winner, McManus offered a modest response, claiming he "had a little on" I Am Maximus. If the suspicions are accurate, McManus could have amassed over £1 million in a single day, considering the £500,000 prize money for the National is distributed among the owner, jockey, trainer, and other connections.

Historic Victory Cements Legacies

I Am Maximus entered the race as the 9-2 favourite, aiming to become the first horse since Ginger McCain's legendary runner to reclaim the National crown. Despite not executing a flawless performance, the horse gradually advanced into contention under Townend's guidance, ultimately overtaking leader Jordans near the elbow to secure victory.

This win propels McManus to the status of the most successful owner in Grand National history, with four victories to his name. Simultaneously, trainer Willie Mullins equalled the record for most wins by a trainer, joining the ranks of George Dockeray, Fred Rimell, and Ginger McCain, each with four triumphs. Dockeray notably trained the inaugural winner, Lottery, back in 1839.

The event underscores the intense fascination and high stakes inherent in the world of horse racing, where substantial bets can lead to monumental payouts and enduring legacies.
