A dramatic incident unfolded in the Leicestershire town of Wigston on Saturday afternoon, as a car careered off the road and crashed directly into the front of a popular Japanese restaurant. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Bell Street following reports of the collision just after 4pm.
Vehicle Mounts Kerb and Collides with Building
The vehicle involved was identified as a Ford Kuga, which reportedly mounted the pavement before smashing into the Shokudo Japanese restaurant. The impact caused significant damage to the frontage of the establishment, which is known for its sushi offerings.
One Person Hospitalised with Non-Life Threatening Injuries
Leicestershire Police confirmed that one person who was inside the building at the time of the incident sustained injuries described as non-life threatening. This individual was promptly taken to hospital by paramedics for further assessment and treatment.
Remarkably, the two occupants of the Ford Kuga, a man and a woman both reported to be in their 80s, emerged from the collision completely unscathed and without any injuries.
Emergency Services Descend on Scene
A substantial emergency response was mobilised, with police officers, ambulance crews, and firefighters all attending the location to secure the area and provide necessary assistance. Police remained at the scene conducting thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A force spokesperson detailed that officers were called to Bell Street at 4.07pm following reports of the collision. They stated that enquiries are ongoing to determine exactly how the incident occurred, with officers reviewing available CCTV footage from the vicinity as part of their investigation.
Eyewitness Describes Loud Bang and Extensive Damage
One shocked eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, described hearing a loud bang before witnessing the aftermath. Speaking to local media, the witness confirmed there was extensive damage visible to the sushi restaurant following the impact.
Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident at this stage. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information about the collision to come forward by contacting police on 101 and quoting incident number 375 of 11 April.
