Feyenoord Fans Vent Fury at Van Persie After Dismal Draw
Robin van Persie and his under-pressure Feyenoord squad were subjected to chants of 'shame on you' from their own supporters following a pitiful 0-0 stalemate against relegation-threatened Volendam on Sunday. The result not only highlighted the team's ongoing struggles but also mathematically confirmed PSV Eindhoven as the champions of the Eredivisie.
Manager Under Microscope as Performances Falter
The former Manchester United, Arsenal, and Netherlands striker has seen his managerial position come under intense scrutiny at the Rotterdam-based club. Despite Feyenoord holding second place in the Dutch top flight, they now trail their rivals by a staggering 17 points. The team's performances have been consistently underwhelming under Van Persie's leadership, with Sunday's lacklustre display against 14th-placed Volendam sparking outright fury among the home fans.
At the full-time whistle, the away end echoed with the chant 'shame on you', a sentiment that midfielder Luciano Valente acknowledged in comments to ESPN. 'We've been hearing that for a while. We are second, with not exactly great play,' Valente admitted. 'That emotion is logical and clear, but we can't do much with it. It's not that they are wrong. We have to move on and have only one objective: Champions League football.'
Style of Play and Fan Backlash Intensify
The style of football implemented by Van Persie has faced heavy criticism throughout the season. Valente defended the team's approach, stating, 'You go all out. It's not like you think we're going to play defensively; we don't want that either. You can't just walk forward like a bunch of blind men. It simply wasn't enough.' This is not the first instance of fan discontent; last month, supporters were heard chanting 'Robin, get lost' during another disappointing outing.
When questioned about the hostile chants, Van Persie responded with resilience. 'I've heard it too, yes, but I've developed a thick skin over the years,' he told ESPN. 'This is part of it. It doesn't get through, no. I make every decision for Feyenoord. I understand the emotions, but the meaning of the word supporter is that you support your club through thick and thin. Some supporters choose to express it that way.'
Sterling's Struggles and Referee Criticism
Adding to Feyenoord's woes, high-profile January signing Raheem Sterling has failed to make a significant impact since his arrival. The former Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool winger started the match against Volendam but was substituted off after another underwhelming performance. In six appearances for the club, Sterling has managed only one assist and is yet to find the back of the net.
Following the goalless draw, Van Persie also directed criticism towards match officials. He took aim at referee Allard Lindhout, saying, 'I didn't get the feeling that we really had him on our side today, let me put it that way.' When VAR was mentioned in his post-match press conference, he sarcastically remarked, 'They were there today, weren't they? Really? Oh, okay. Good to know they were there.'
Van Persie specifically highlighted the treatment of striker Ayase Ueda, arguing that the player deserves more protection. 'I think it is especially unfair towards Ayase Ueda. He is being played very hard. That is allowed; that is simply part of football within the lines,' he explained. 'Ayase is a very honest player; he doesn't just go down. He truly never gets anything, nothing. No penalty, no free kick. Nothing, ever. It is truly unbelievable. He deserves a bit more protection in that regard, I think.'
