Golfing icon Gary Player will participate in the ceremonial opening tee shot at the Masters tournament this Thursday, but he will do so without his son, Wayne, by his side. This absence stems from a lifetime ban imposed on Wayne Player by Augusta National following a controversial incident during the 2021 event.
The 2021 Masters Ceremony and the Infamous Stunt
Gary Player, a three-time Masters champion with nine major titles to his name, has been a regular part of the honorary starters tradition since 2012. He has shared the tee with legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson to officially commence the tournament. However, the 2021 ceremony was marred by controversy when his son, Wayne, served as his caddie.
That year, Augusta National was paying tribute to Lee Elder, the trailblazing African-American golfer who became the first of his race to compete in the Masters in 1975. As Elder walked onto the tee box, Wayne Player, then 61 years old, positioned himself behind Elder during the introduction. In what was widely condemned as a shameless marketing ploy, he brazenly displayed a box of OnCore golf balls—a brand that sponsored him.
Immediate Backlash and Lifetime Ban
Sharp-eyed viewers and attendees quickly criticised Wayne's actions, and Augusta National responded swiftly. The club withdrew his tournament credentials and issued a permanent ban from the course. Although Augusta National chose not to publicly address the incident or the sanctions, the message was clear: such behaviour would not be tolerated at one of golf's most prestigious events.
In a 2022 interview with Golf Digest, Wayne Player reflected on the episode, stating, "Well, they say there's no such thing as bad publicity. I found out that that's not quite true. I had probably 50 texts after that, 40 of them said I'm a marketing genius, 10 were like, 'What the hell were you thinking?' It wasn't premeditated, but it was a tacky thing."
Apology Rejected and Lasting Consequences
Despite sending an apology letter after the incident, Wayne was unable to have the ban lifted. He revealed, "It said thanks but no thanks. It said, you know, we appreciate you reaching out and apologising, we accept your apology, but we are not changing our position, we are not going to allow you back. You ruined a special moment in the history of the game of golf."
This decision underscores Augusta National's commitment to preserving the integrity and solemnity of the Masters, particularly during moments honouring significant figures like Lee Elder, who passed away later in 2021.
