A Professional Approach for a Veteran Campaign
Now 63 years old and turning 64 in May, Jimmy White insists he is far more dedicated and professional in his approach compared to his celebrated heyday during the 1980s and 1990s. He begins his latest qualifying campaign on Monday, facing Chinese star Gao Yang in the opening round at Sheffield's Institute of Sport. The qualifying process runs until April 15th, with White needing to win four best-of-19 frame matches to secure a coveted spot at the Crucible Theatre.
Eliminating Distractions for Peak Performance
In an exclusive interview with The Sun, White revealed the lengths he is going to in order to ensure his preparation is flawless. "I'm going with my son this time, only because he's been getting the balls out. I've got no distractions. I'll have no phone, nothing," White stated emphatically. He believes this focused environment, assisted by his youngest son, has created ideal conditions. "I'm going up there the best prepared I've been for probably 25 years. I know that sounds crazy, but it really is the truth," he added.
The Impact of Owning His Own Club
A significant factor in White's renewed dedication is the opening of his own venue, the Jimmy White Sports Lounge in Woking, which launched in 2024. The Whirlwind credits the club with transforming his practice routine. "Since I've opened the club, I've been practising more than ever," White explained. "Having a club, I've had loads of people come and play loads of matches. I feel a lot sharper going into these qualifiers."
He contrasted his current regimen with his previous habits, noting, "I'm there every day. What I was doing previously, when I'd go to my club in Epsom, I'd have a couple of hours practice with my son, then maybe go back and do another hour and a half. But with Jimmy's Lounge, I'm there all day and without even knowing, I'm playing like six or seven hours. It's really brought me on, you know, leaps and bounds."
Confidence and Challenges Ahead
Currently ranked 123rd in the world, White faces a tough path, as only the top sixteen players receive automatic entry to the last thirty-two. Higher-ranked opponents enter the qualifying stages at later rounds. Despite the challenge, White expressed supreme confidence in his current form. "I hope I can keep this form up. I've got to win four matches, which is like winning a tournament because you have to win four best-of-19 frames. But my game has never been in better shape. I'm really excited," he declared.
A Busy Spring Schedule Regardless
Even if White falls short in his quest to qualify for the main World Championship, his spring schedule remains packed. He has already confirmed his participation in the World Seniors Championship, which begins on May 6th. White, who triumphed in the Seniors event in 2023, will be joined by snooker greats including Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Williams, and Ali Carter, ensuring his presence at the Crucible this season regardless of the qualifying outcome.
