Chelsea icon John Terry has moved swiftly to quash rumours that he is poised to leave his role at Stamford Bridge to take his first step into management with Oxford United.
Terry's Firm Denial on Social Media
In a clear video statement posted on social media, the former England captain addressed the speculation head-on. "I just want to talk about me being linked with the Oxford job," Terry stated. "I'm not sure where these rumours come from, I'm certainly not on the lookout for a job." He emphasised his dedication to his current position, saying, "I've spoken about how much I love my role at Chelsea in the academy."
Terry, 45, explicitly ruled himself out of contention for the League One side. He confirmed he has had no contact with the club, stating, "Certainly not approached Oxford, I've not spoken to anybody at all. So I just want to completely rule myself out of it." He concluded by wishing the club well in their search for a new boss.
Oxford's Search After Rowett Departure
The managerial vacancy arose at Oxford United after the club dismissed Gary Rowett on 23 December following a disappointing run of form. The club acted quickly to install Craig Short as their interim manager.
Short's tenure began in spectacular fashion, overseeing a 2-1 victory over Southampton on Boxing Day, secured by a late winner from Stan Mills in the 89th minute. This vital result lifted Oxford to 21st in the Championship table, outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone.
Short, who is in his fourth spell as caretaker at the club, has also indicated he does not see himself as the long-term solution. "All I want to focus on is trying to be a safe pair of hands," he said after the win, aiming to steady the ship through the festive fixtures.
Terry's Coaching Pathway at Chelsea
John Terry returned to Chelsea in July 2023 to work within the club's academy system, focusing on the progression of young players. This role followed his earlier coaching experiences at Aston Villa and Leicester City, where he served as an assistant.
In his social media statement, Terry highlighted the fulfilment he finds in his current duties, working with players "in the progression from youth team to reserves to the first team." His commitment appears absolute, putting an end to the early chatter linking him with a move to the Kassam Stadium.
Oxford United's hierarchy continues its search for a permanent manager, with Short expected to remain in charge for upcoming matches against Swansea City and Ipswich Town.
