Liverpool's Defensive Crisis Deepens Ahead of Qarabag Match
Liverpool are set to deploy a midfielder in the centre-back position for their upcoming Champions League fixture against Qarabag, as a severe injury crisis leaves manager Arne Slot with limited defensive options. The situation has escalated with Joe Gomez becoming the latest casualty, joining an already depleted backline.
Injury Woes Mount for Slot's Squad
Gomez was forced off during Liverpool's recent defeat to Bournemouth due to a hip injury, and Slot has confirmed his unavailability for the European clash. This adds to the absence of Giovanni Leoni, who is out for the season, and Ibrahima Konate, who is on compassionate leave following the death of his father. Konate has missed the last two games, and while Slot hopes for his swift return, he will not feature against Qarabag.
Slot addressed the media, stating, "I can confirm he is not available" regarding Gomez, but expressed optimism that the defender's absence will be short-term. He added, "I expect him back in a relatively short time", indicating Liverpool are unlikely to seek reinforcements in the transfer market despite the crisis.
Midfielder Steps into Defensive Role
With only captain Virgil van Dijk fit among the senior centre-backs, Slot has been compelled to reshuffle his formation. Wataru Endo, typically a midfielder, is in line to partner Van Dijk at the heart of the defence. Slot explained the necessity, saying, "It is for sure that at centre-back tomorrow there will not be a centre-back. I can only play a midfielder over there, because there are no centre-backs available, apart from Virgil, who is one of the players I credit a lot for him being fit all the time."
Robertson's Future at Anfield
In other squad news, vice-captain Andy Robertson appears set to remain at Liverpool despite interest from Tottenham. The club engaged in talks over a potential move for the left-back but ultimately decided against letting him depart. Slot commented on Robertson's situation, noting, "Robbo is part of the team tomorrow evening. He's been part of this squad, of this club for so many years and I'm happy to have him. It's hard to say anything definitive in this world we are in, but I expect him to stay, yes."
This defensive reshuffle comes at a critical juncture in Liverpool's Champions League campaign, testing the squad's depth and adaptability under Slot's management.
