Arne Slot Confirms Liverpool's Defensive Injury Crisis Ahead of Qarabag Clash
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has openly addressed a significant defensive injury crisis within his squad, as the Reds prepare for their final Champions League group stage match against Qarabag. With only one recognised centre-back available, Slot has hinted at potential January transfer activity to bolster his depleted backline.
Defensive Dilemma for Champions League Encounter
Speaking ahead of Wednesday's crucial fixture at Anfield, Slot confirmed that Virgil van Dijk will be the sole available recognised centre-back. This situation arises due to injuries to Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, while Ibrahima Konate is also sidelined following the recent passing of his father.
When questioned about Gomez's condition, Slot provided a straightforward update: "No timescale but I can confirm he's not available tomorrow. I've spoken to Ibou and we know he's having a hard time. I'm hoping him back soon but not for tomorrow."
Midfielders to Fill Defensive Void
With such limited options, Slot revealed that midfielder Waturo Endo is likely to partner Van Dijk in central defence against Qarabag. This makeshift solution highlights the severity of Liverpool's current predicament.
Slot elaborated on Endo's role: "He's been out a while and come back, and tomorrow a game coming up and Saturday another. For sure at centre-back tomorrow there will be someone who isn't a centre-back, apart from Virgil. It'll be a midfielder or somewhere else. Virgil's ability to play 90 [minutes] should not be taken for granted."
Robertson's Future and Transfer Window Implications
Amidst the defensive crisis, Slot also addressed speculation surrounding left-back Andy Robertson. Recent reports suggested Tottenham Hotspur were in talks to sign the 31-year-old Scottish international, whose contract expires in six months.
However, Slot indicated that Robertson is likely to remain at Liverpool for the remainder of the season, partly due to the club's inability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his season-long loan at Roma. "Robbo is part of the team tomorrow evening and has been part of this squad for so many years," Slot stated. "We are happy to have him, good that he's available. It's hard to say anything definite in this world we are in, but I expect him to stay (this month)."
Champions League Stakes and Squad Management
Liverpool's match against Qarabag carries significant importance, as a victory would secure their place in the Champions League last 16, avoiding the play-off round next month. Despite the defensive challenges, Slot emphasised his respect for the available players and the difficulties of managing a small squad.
"It's not a worry that I have a small squad but it's a difficulty," Slot admitted. "I'd have preferred to have started [Hugo] Ekitike against Bournemouth but with only one nine available for the coming months, it made sense to manage his load. Giving Jeremie Frimpong another 90, it would have been a big risk to keep him on."
He further praised his squad's resilience: "I have to emphasise the respect for the players we have. It's almost constantly the same players who have to play, when we lose we get scrutinised and criticism we deserve. They are constantly available apart from the three we have (out injured)."
As the January transfer window approaches its deadline, Slot's comments suggest Liverpool may need to act swiftly to address their defensive shortcomings, ensuring they remain competitive across all competitions.
