Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic has been handed a significant setback after the NBA suspended him for one game without pay on Saturday. The suspension comes as the Slovenian basketball icon is entangled in a deeply personal and contentious legal dispute with his former fiancée regarding custody and financial support for their two young children.
On-Court Incident Leads to Automatic Suspension
Doncic, who currently leads the NBA in scoring, received his suspension after accumulating his 16th technical foul of the regular season. The critical infraction occurred during the third quarter of the Lakers' commanding 116-99 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday evening.
The altercation unfolded when Nets player Ziaire Williams celebrated a foul called against Doncic by shouting aggressively in the Slovenian's personal space. Doncic responded by pushing Williams' arm away, prompting Williams to retaliate with a backhand swipe across Doncic's face. Following an official review, both athletes were assessed technical fouls.
NBA Rules Leave Doncic Walking a Tightrope
Under established NBA regulations, any player or coach who receives a 16th technical foul during the regular season faces an automatic one-game suspension without compensation. Furthermore, for every two additional technical fouls accrued, another one-game suspension is mandated. This places Doncic in a precarious position for the remainder of the season.
Doncic, who delivered an impressive 41-point performance against the Nets, will serve his suspension on Monday when the Lakers welcome the Washington Wizards to their home court. Reflecting on the incident, Doncic expressed frustration, stating, 'He was yelling in my face three times. I just wanted to get out of there. It's a double tech, of course. What can I say? I didn't even talk.'
The Lakers star contested the referee's decision, arguing, 'The referee said my push was exaggerated, which it was obviously not. I don't know what else to say.' Notably, Doncic had a previous technical foul rescinded last week following a verbal exchange with Orlando Magic's Goga Bitadze, though the league did not disclose its reasoning for the reversal.
Simmering Personal Legal Battle Intensifies
This professional discipline arrives amidst an increasingly bitter personal conflict between Doncic and his ex-fiancée, Anamaria Goltes. The dispute centers on child support arrangements for their two daughters, Gabriela, aged two, and Olivia, just three months old.
According to recently filed court documents, the 27-year-old basketball star has moved to dismiss Goltes' petition for child support, which was submitted in Los Angeles. Doncic asserts that the California court lacks proper jurisdiction, arguing that neither Goltes nor their children are residents of the state.
Allegations of Forum Shopping in Child Support Case
Doncic has taken legal action in his home country of Slovenia, filing a family law case there last month. He accuses Goltes of being aware of these Slovenian proceedings but deliberately choosing to file in California to benefit from the state's reputation for awarding substantial child support payments.
'Luka has always provided for anything his daughters could need or want and will continue to do so,' a spokesperson for Doncic emphasized in an official statement. 'He will always fight to be with his daughters and give them the best life possible. Luka is seeking dismissal of this case simply because Slovenia, not California, is the appropriate forum for adjudication of this dispute.'
Earlier this month, Doncic publicly confirmed the end of his engagement to Goltes, mere months after the birth of their second child. 'I love my daughters more than anything and I've been doing everything I can for them to be with me in the US during the season,' Doncic told ESPN. 'But that hasn't been possible, so I recently made the tough decision to end my engagement. Everything I do is for my daughters' happiness.'
Longstanding Relationship Reaches Breaking Point
The couple's history dates back to their childhood. They first met at age twelve during a seaside holiday in Croatia and maintained the same circle of friends throughout their relationship. Doncic proposed to Goltes in a romantic setting near Bled Castle in Slovenia during July 2023.
Before Doncic's public announcement regarding the engagement's termination, Goltes had already submitted her petition to a California court, seeking an unspecified amount in child support and requesting coverage for associated legal fees. Doncic has since enlisted high-profile legal representation, including a celebrity attorney known for previous work with Kim Kardashian, to navigate this complex international family law battle.
The personal strain has visibly impacted Doncic's professional commitments this season, as he missed several Lakers games to be present for the birth of his second daughter, whom he described as marking 'the happiest day of my life.' As both his on-court conduct and off-court legal struggles continue to unfold, the NBA superstar faces mounting pressures on multiple fronts.
