Kobbie Mainoo has heaped praise on Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, declaring he would 'die for him' after scoring the dramatic winner against Liverpool. The 21-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable week, signing a new contract with the Red Devils before netting the decisive goal in a 3-2 victory over their bitter rivals.
Mainoo's Admiration for Carrick
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Mainoo said: "He's [Carrick] played a huge part. The confidence in not just me but all the players. You want to follow him and fight for him and die for him on the pitch. That's what we showed today." The win secured United's place in next season's Champions League, capping an impressive turnaround under Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim earlier this season.
Mainoo's Return to Form
United's resurgence has coincided with Mainoo's return to the starting lineup. The academy graduate had been linked with a departure under Amorim but has now committed his future to the club by signing a deal until 2031. Reflecting on his own form, Mainoo admitted: "It was difficult, of course, any time you're not playing football. I just tried to look forward as much as possible, keep working hard and keep my head down."
United's Champions League Qualification
On the team's remarkable turnaround, Mainoo added: "One hundred per cent. To turn it around the way we have done, it's a credit to the players and the manager as well. We are just looking forward and still need to finish the season strong. It's not enough for us. We want to just keep on winning and winning." United currently sit third in the Premier League, their best position since the 2022/23 season.
Upcoming Fixtures
United travel to Sunderland next weekend, followed by matches against Nottingham Forest and Brighton to close the campaign. Mainoo, who has not been among the goals frequently, enjoyed scoring in such a significant fixture: "I've not been around the goals too much but happy to be around it in this game, such a special occasion and special fixture."
