Sir Mo Farah Proceeds with Qatar Move Despite Middle East Conflict

Sir Mo Farah, the celebrated British Olympic athlete, has made a definitive decision to relocate his family from the United Kingdom to Qatar, establishing permanent residency in the Gulf nation. This move comes at a time of heightened tensions and military conflict in the Middle East, involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, with Qatar itself facing security threats.

Residency Shift and Financial Implications

Farah, aged 43, and his wife Tania have formally changed their residential status from the UK to Qatar, as documented in paperwork for his company. The company holds assets valued at £3.9 million and contributed £375,000 in tax and VAT during the 2023 financial year. By establishing residency in Qatar, Farah will benefit from tax exemption, a significant financial consideration for the four-time Olympic gold medallist.

The family, which includes stepdaughter Rihanna, twin daughters Aisha and Amani, and son Hussein, has been living in Doha, Qatar's capital, since 2024. This followed Farah's retirement from competitive running, and the recent paperwork solidifies their intention to remain there long-term.

Safety Concerns and Family Priorities

Despite the ongoing war in the Middle East, which has prompted over 100,000 British citizens to flee the region and return to the UK in the past month, Farah has expressed confidence in Qatar's safety. In an interview with The Telegraph in July, he remarked, "It’s much safer than London. I started to worry, living in London, because you can educate your kids as much as you can, but if they get in the wrong place at the wrong time, you see a lot of stuff happening. That’s a worry."

Farah and his family have firsthand experience with regional aggression, having witnessed conflicts between the US and Iran last summer. However, he maintains that the move is driven by a desire to provide a stable, private environment for his children, away from the intense scrutiny of celebrity life in the UK.

Background and Personal Motivations

Originally from Somalia, Farah moved to the UK as an eight-year-old and later spent seven years in Portland, Oregon, during his athletics career. He explained to The National in November that the relocation to Qatar was not premeditated but evolved naturally. "It wasn't always the plan to go. [It wasn’t] ‘I'm in the UK, I want to move.' It just naturally happened and it's about being able to be happy and enjoy yourself," he said.

Farah emphasized that his retirement has allowed him to focus on family time, stating, "I've always said that when I do stop [running], I want to have quality time with my family. I was away six months of the year, away from them, and now it's about being able to give back to my kids, support them in whatever they want to do."

The family's positive experience during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they attended matches including England versus the USA and the final, further influenced their decision. Farah noted that his children loved the visit, reinforcing his goal to create a happy, supportive home environment.

While the Farahs retain a property in Weybridge, Surrey, their primary residence is now in Doha, where they enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle. Farah added, "It's a lot easier, we can go down the street and I can be with my family, and I can do remotely what I do for my job." This move underscores his commitment to balancing professional obligations with family well-being, even amid regional instability.
