Onana's Inter Milan Return Talks Emerge as Man United Exit Looms
Onana's Inter Milan Return Talks Emerge

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana could be presented with a remarkable opportunity to return to Inter Milan this summer, following discussions between his representatives and the Serie A club.

Agents in Milan for Transfer Talks

The Cameroon international's agents are currently in Milan this week to explore several potential deals. Daily Mail Sport understands that among the topics discussed was the possibility of Onana making a dramatic comeback to the San Siro.

Onana is currently on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor, having lost his place as United's first-choice goalkeeper to Senne Lammens. The Belgian shot-stopper arrived from Royal Antwerp in September, prompting Onana's temporary departure.

Inter Considering Onana as Sommer Replacement

Although the 29-year-old hasn't abandoned hope of reviving his Old Trafford career, he is widely expected to depart permanently at the season's conclusion. Inter Milan are reportedly discussing him as a potential replacement for Yann Sommer, who joined the Italian club from Bayern Munich in summer 2023 when Onana made his move to Manchester United.

Onana enjoyed tremendous popularity during his single season at Inter in 2022-23. His contributions were instrumental in the club reaching the Champions League final, where they narrowly lost to Manchester City in Istanbul. That season also saw Inter secure both the Italian Cup and Super Cup trophies.

United's £47.2 Million Gamble

His impressive performances convinced Manchester United to invest £47.2 million in his signature. However, after two seasons of inconsistent form, the Premier League club decided to make a change between the posts.

Thriving in Turkish Football

Since joining Trabzonspor on loan, Onana has rediscovered his best form. He has lost just three of his sixteen appearances, helping propel the Turkish side to third place in the Super Lig table at the halfway point of the season, trailing only Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

This resurgence has captured Inter Milan's attention as they contemplate their goalkeeping options for the coming campaign. The Nerazzurri are reportedly considering bringing the Cameroonian back to familiar surroundings.

Potential Obstacles to Overcome

While Onana still owns property in Milan, financial considerations could present challenges. The goalkeeper received a pay increase when joining Trabzonspor from United, after it became evident he wouldn't remain as Lammens' backup.

With two-and-a-half years remaining on his Manchester United contract, any permanent transfer would likely require the English club to negotiate a settlement. This financial aspect could prove crucial in determining whether Onana's San Siro return becomes reality.

The coming months will reveal whether these preliminary discussions develop into concrete negotiations, potentially marking a significant chapter in the career of a goalkeeper who has experienced both triumph and turbulence across Europe's top leagues.
