Postecoglou Delivers Verdict on Tottenham's Survival Prospects
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has issued a stark warning, stating that his old club faces "a hell of a fight" to avoid relegation from the Premier League. However, he remains confident that Spurs possess the necessary quality to secure their top-flight status.
Current Situation and Postecoglou's Assessment
Tottenham currently occupy 17th place in the Premier League table, a precarious position with just one point separating them from the relegation zone. Their form has been dismal, with only two league victories in their last 22 fixtures. Postecoglou, who was dismissed in June 2025 despite delivering the club's first trophy in 17 years, expressed his ongoing emotional connection to Tottenham during an interview with Australian broadcaster SEN 1116.
"I still have a really strong attachment to the club," Postecoglou told host Gerard Whateley. "It was two years and they were by no means easy years, but we invested a lot into them. Second last game we won a European trophy, which was an incredible high. The connection there will be there forever."
He admitted that watching the team's struggles has been difficult. "To watch them struggle has not been easy and it’s not the way I thought it would go. They’re in a hell of a fight, relegation is massive for any club but for Tottenham, it’s a pretty big deal. They have some fighting to do and they have the quality to get out. They need a circuit-breaker, for sure."
Club's Immediate Challenges and Managerial Uncertainty
The team faces a critical period with seven games remaining in the season. Currently, there is no fixture scheduled until 12 April, providing players and staff with a brief respite. However, the club is navigating a complex situation with interim head coach Igor Tudor, who is mourning the recent death of his father.
This personal tragedy comes amid a poor run of form under Tudor, with five defeats in the last seven matches, including a demoralising 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday. In light of this, former Tottenham midfielders Tim Sherwood and Gus Poyet have reportedly offered their services should Tudor depart his role.
Speculation Surrounding Future Managerial Appointments
Managerial speculation is intensifying as the club seeks stability. Former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has been heavily linked with the position. However, sources suggest he is unlikely to accept a mid-season appointment following his dismissal from Marseille in February and would prefer to wait until the summer before considering any new role.
Additionally, reports emerging from France have connected former Monaco head coach Adi Hutter to the vacant Tottenham job, indicating the club's search may be broadening as they look to secure their Premier League future and plan for the next campaign.
