Real Madrid Fume at 'Unbelievable' Red Card as Bayern Munich Win Champions League Thriller
Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa was left incensed over a red card shown to Eduardo Camavinga in the late stages of a dramatic Champions League quarter-final tie defeat to Bayern Munich. The Spanish giants fell to a 4-3 loss on the night, with Bayern advancing 6-4 on aggregate after a pulsating encounter at the Allianz Arena.
Camavinga's Moment of Madness Turns the Tide
With the aggregate score level at 3-3 and Real Madrid ahead late in the second half, the match appeared destined for extra time. However, substitute Camavinga was given a second booking for kicking the ball away and delaying a Bayern free-kick, reducing Real to ten men. The midfielder had initially been cautioned for a tackle on Bayern striker Harry Kane, and his subsequent action of picking up the ball and throwing it away prompted the decisive second yellow card.
"It's unbelievable to send off a player for this action," Arbeloa said post-match. "It's not possible in a player like that, match like that. We feel really upset, really angry, really disappointed. We feel all of this is a bit unfair."
Bayern Capitalise on Numerical Advantage
Less than three minutes after Camavinga's dismissal, Luis Diaz drilled home Bayern's third equaliser of the night before Michael Olise struck in stoppage time to clinch a 4-3 victory. The win extended Bayern's unbeaten run to 16 games in all competitions and sealed their first two-legged triumph over Real Madrid since 2012.
Harry Kane, who scored his 50th goal of the season in the match, commented on the red card incident: "There were decisions that went against us the whole game and the rules are the rules. It was a clear yellow card, I've had a couple of those in my career that have affected me. The referee has to make a decision there and it went our way today."
Arbeloa Reflects on a Thrilling Encounter
Despite the disappointment, Arbeloa acknowledged the quality of the match. "That was a great match, this second leg. We put players like Militao, Bellingham, Mendy that couldn't play the first leg, and we did a great match here. We scored three goals, had chances to score more, but with the red card everything was over."
The victory sets up a Champions League semi-final showdown between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, while Atletico Madrid will face Arsenal in the other tie. The semi-finals are scheduled for 28-29 April and 5-6 May, with Bayern now firmly focused on maintaining their momentum across all competitions.
