Wayne Rooney has predicted that Arsenal will go on to win the Premier League title 'comfortably' after they opened up a six-point buffer over Manchester City at the summit on Saturday.
The Gunners beat Fulham 3-0 courtesy of goals from Bukayo Saka and Viktor Gyokeres, who bagged a brace. The win means Arsenal move onto 76 points with three games remaining, with City currently on 70, although they do have two games in hand.
Pep Guardiola's side could move level on points with their title rivals if they win both of those games after beating Arsenal a fortnight ago to all but extinguish their previous lead over them.
But Rooney says he still felt Arsenal would have enough to beat City to the title even despite losing such a seismic game - and he even fancies the former champions to slip up before the end of the season to give Mikel Arteta and Co more breathing room.
Rooney's Confidence in Arsenal
"I think Arsenal will win it," the former Manchester United and England striker said on Match of the Day. "I felt this after Man City beat Arsenal as well. I felt it was maybe in Arsenal’s heads having to go to Man City and losing in the cup final to them.
"But I think still being there, level on points after that City defeat, and I think the fixtures are more favourable for Arsenal. I think they’ll win every game. And I could see City slipping up in one or two games.
"I could see Arsenal actually being quite comfortable, I think maybe three, five points."
Arsenal's Remaining Fixtures
Arsenal will play their final three league games in London, with trips to West Ham and Crystal Palace sandwiched either side of a home fixture against already-relegated Burnley.
City travel to Everton on Monday night before games against Brentford, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Aston Villa. And although they have already closed a significant gap on Arsenal to reinvigorate their title hopes, Rooney doesn't see them doing it again.
When he was asked why he feels City will drop points in the run-in, Rooney replied: "I just do. Listen, Arsenal have been fantastic, they’ve been top of the league for most of the season.
"I just think Arsenal have got a way of playing which doesn’t catch everyone’s eye. But I just think City, with the games they’ve got, it’s congested, Arsenal have been there all season, I think it’s their year."
