Chelsea Manager Liam Rosenior Lifts Lid on Enzo Fernandez Saga
Liam Rosenior has provided a detailed update on the Enzo Fernandez situation at Chelsea, confirming the midfielder will return to the squad next week after serving an internal suspension. Fernandez missed Chelsea's last two matches, including a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, due to a club-enforced ban following comments he made about a potential move to Madrid.
Rosenior Insists 'Nothing Personal' in Decision
Speaking after the loss to City, Rosenior emphasized that the suspension was a strategic, long-term decision rather than a personal issue. "Any team will miss Enzo," he stated. "Myself backed by the leadership group and sporting directors made a decision for the long-term of the club. There's nothing personal with Enzo. He will be back with the group on Tuesday. He is a top, top player and a really good guy. Really looking forward to having him back."
The situation escalated when Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, publicly criticized the ban, but Rosenior maintained his stance, even after Fernandez apologized. The Chelsea boss highlighted that the midfielder needed to address the leadership group and teammates before returning, a step he has now completed.
Fernandez's Apology and Team Discussions
Rosenior explained that Fernandez had not yet spoken to the players at the time of the initial press conference but has since held necessary conversations. "Enzo wanted to have a conversation with the leadership group - the main players of the group - and speak to the players," Rosenior said. "The time I had the press conference, he hadn't done that yet. He has spoken with me, the leadership group and all of the players and we look forward to welcoming him back."
He added that Fernandez has been supportive in recent days, aiding the team despite his absence, and praised his character and professionalism.
Impact on Chelsea's Performance and Future
Reflecting on the Manchester City match, Rosenior admitted that Fernandez's absence might have influenced the outcome. "Possibly. Possibly, in hindsight, you see 20-20 in hindsight. Enzo's a top player and honestly he's a top character and I'm looking forward to having him back next week," he noted.
He stressed that the decision was aligned with the club's directors and player leadership to uphold long-term values and culture. "Sometimes you make decisions not based on the short-term, you make decisions based on what you want to see long-term. And it was a long-term decision that myself and the directors and the club aligned and the leadership group of players that we made to make sure that our values and our culture in the long-term is in the right place."
With Chelsea currently sixth in the Premier League, four points behind Liverpool for the final Champions League spot, Fernandez's return could be crucial. The team faces Manchester United next weekend at Stamford Bridge, aiming to boost their top-four hopes.
