Manchester City Star Antoine Semenyo Lauds Rayan Cherki as Global Elite
Antoine Semenyo has declared his Manchester City teammate Rayan Cherki to be among the world's finest footballers in the wake of their emphatic FA Cup triumph over Liverpool. The pair played pivotal roles as City secured a commanding 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Erling Haaland's hat-trick propelling the team into the semi-finals for a record-extending eighth consecutive season.
Creative Masterclass on Display
Semenyo and Cherki combined effectively throughout the match, notably setting up one of Haaland's goals before Cherki's incisive pass allowed Semenyo to score himself in a devastating attacking display. "He's one of the world's best," affirmed City winger Semenyo. "He can literally do anything with the ball, so he makes my life easy. I know that he's going to drop and he's going to try and find me in behind or play to my feet, so it just makes it easier."
Cherki's disguised pass for Semenyo to cross for Haaland's second goal particularly bewildered the Liverpool defence, showcasing his exceptional creative quality and vision on the pitch.
Maverick Moments and Managerial Scrutiny
However, Cherki's flair was not without its moments of controversy. As seen previously in the Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal, the Frenchman indulged in occasional flicks and tricks once the game was secured, a tendency that has historically drawn a frosty response from manager Pep Guardiola. With Guardiola serving a touchline ban and assistant Pep Lijnders handling media duties, the manager's immediate reaction remained unclear.
Yet, Cherki did receive admonishment from the bench after swapping shirts with Hugo Ekitike following his late substitution. He put the shirt on before full time and was promptly instructed to remove it, adding to his reputation as a maverick talent.
Semenyo's Admiration for Cherki's Skill
For Semenyo, though, it is Cherki's creativity and technical skill that truly stand out. "I remember my first day in training," recalled Semenyo. "Just some of the skills he was pulling up, I thought, 'What kind of player is he?' He's a top player. Creative with the ball and we love it."
City's Domestic Treble Ambitions
The victory marked a strong return for Manchester City after the international break, underscoring their determination to finish the season powerfully with a domestic treble within reach. Semenyo emphasised the team's aspirations, stating, "I feel like there's so much aspiration, so many goals that we want to achieve this season. There's more to come and just have to keep going. It's the most important part of the season now, so we just want to win as many games as we can. Every game's the final now, so we just have to keep pushing and see what happens."
This performance not only highlighted City's depth and talent but also solidified Cherki's status as a key creative force in their pursuit of silverware this season.
