Slot Slams Inconsistent Refereeing as Liverpool's Champions League Hopes Hang in Balance
Slot Criticises Refereeing After Liverpool's Defeat in Istanbul

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has voiced strong criticism of what he described as an inconsistent refereeing performance, coupled with his team's profligacy in front of goal, following a damaging 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul. The result leaves the Reds' Champions League campaign precariously balanced ahead of the second leg at Anfield next Wednesday.

Controversial Decisions Mar First-Leg Defeat

The match was decided by Mario Lemina's first-half goal, but Slot's post-match ire was directed at a pivotal second-half incident. Liverpool had a goal disallowed for handball by Ibrahima Konate, while simultaneously, Virgil van Dijk appeared to be pulled in the penalty area without a spot-kick being awarded.

'In the Premier League there is much more allowed than in the Champions League,' Slot remarked. 'We discussed these differences before the game, which is why I was so surprised it was not a penalty. The referee was quick to give Galatasaray free-kicks for minor incidents, yet in the same situation when they committed a foul, he seemed to accept it completely. Over the 90 minutes, I cannot say I am surprised by that decision.'

Frustration Over Disallowed Goal and Officiating Consistency

Slot elaborated on his frustrations, stating: 'If we assume the disallowed goal was correct—though opinions vary and it's not entirely obvious—I was even more frustrated that every set-piece we took seemed to result in a free-kick for Galatasaray. When you consider how much they pulled Virgil's shirt before the ball hit Ibou's arm, it's clear we weren't the only ones affected by the intense atmosphere here today.'

Looking Ahead to the Anfield Return

The Liverpool boss, celebrating his 100th game in charge, remains optimistic about the second leg, believing conditions will be more 'normal' at Anfield. He acknowledged Galatasaray's clinical edge, contrasting it with Liverpool's wastefulness.

'We failed to score, and like in our previous encounter, their first attack led to a corner and ultimately a goal. You must credit them for treating every chance as if it were their last. This is a lesson for us; we sometimes act as if we'll get ten more opportunities when we create chances.'

Slot added: 'Istanbul is already a difficult venue, but being 1-0 down makes it even tougher. However, it's only half-time. We've lost here twice 1-0, but the next game is at Anfield, where our fans can generate a similar atmosphere. I doubt so many things will go against us as they have in the last two matches against Galatasaray. Things should be more standard in the home game, and with an improved performance and our supporters' help, we can turn this around next week.'
