Tottenham Supporters' Trust Voices Strong Opposition to New Head Coach
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust has issued a strongly worded condemnation of the club's appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as head coach, expressing what it describes as "serious and far-reaching concerns" regarding his previous public support for Mason Greenwood.
Immediate Backlash Following Five-Year Contract Announcement
In a statement released shortly after De Zerbi signed a five-year contract with Spurs on Tuesday, the supporters' trust declared that his arrival places a "heavy strain" on club unity at a critical juncture. Tottenham are currently battling against relegation from the Premier League, making fan support more crucial than ever.
The trust has called upon both the club and De Zerbi to publicly reaffirm their commitment to fundamental values cherished by supporters, particularly equality, respect, and integrity. This demand comes amid growing discontent among the fanbase.
Controversy Centered on Marseille Tenure and Greenwood Comments
The criticism focuses specifically on De Zerbi's time as manager at Marseille, where he openly supported the club's signing of Mason Greenwood despite significant controversy surrounding the player's private life. Greenwood faced serious charges in 2022, including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Although the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew and new evidence emerged, the allegations left a lasting shadow over Greenwood's career. After leaving Manchester United, Greenwood spent time on loan at Spanish club Getafe before joining Marseille permanently in 2024 under De Zerbi's management.
During this period, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a "good person" and expressed sadness about what had transpired, stating he knew "a very different person from the one portrayed in England." These remarks have sparked widespread condemnation.
Fan Groups Unite in Condemnation
Multiple supporter organizations have joined the criticism, including Proud Lilywhites, Tottenham's LGBTQI+ supporters' association, and Women of the Lane. The supporters' trust revealed it had contacted the club prior to De Zerbi's appointment to voice opposition, highlighting the depth of concern within the fan community.
"While we recognise the limited pool of managers with recent Premier League experience, and the need to act with urgency as Spurs face the prospect of relegation, this appointment raises serious and far-reaching concerns," the trust stated. "Many fans have been in touch with us to urge us to communicate the strength of feeling."
The trust characterized De Zerbi's comments about Greenwood as "unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters" and warned they would undoubtedly alarm victims of male violence.
Threat to Club Unity and Values
"We believe these statements, left unchecked, will create a divide among supporters at a time when we all need to be pulling together to back the team," the trust continued. "It is concerning that the club would put us in this position right when the team needs fans the most."
The statement referenced the "All Together, Always" initiative that fans have been rallying behind, noting that De Zerbi's appointment places substantial strain on that unity. The trust suggested that if his remarks reflect genuine views, they cast a troubling shadow over the values of the club.
Furthermore, the trust emphasized that any perceived sympathy toward alleged perpetrators of physical or sexual violence against women "fundamentally undermines trust in the custodianship of this club."
Demands for Action and Accountability
The supporters' trust concluded with specific demands for both the club and De Zerbi. "With this appointment, communications from the club and from Mr De Zerbi must clearly and unequivocally reaffirm these values," they stated. "Furthermore, those words must be backed by meaningful action, including visible and sustained support for women's charities and organizations working to combat violence against women."
Tottenham Hotspur has been approached for comment regarding the supporters' trust statement and the ongoing controversy surrounding their new head coach's past remarks.
